Local gunshop has a stainless 338 win ruger stainless with boat paddle stock. Price is 500 but the barrel is bulged at about 18 inches.

Maybe, point it out to the seller and get him down to 250 then send it to Ruger to be rebarreled. That's the only way it would be worth it for me

Not before having a competent gunsmith check the recoil lugs and the action. Then plan/prepare on a re-barrel.
Does the bolt move slightly fwd. when you open it. Whatever caused the barrel bulge potentially could have slightly recessed the lugs into the action. Therefore ruining it.
Sawed a couple of rifles in to back in the day when I worked at a LGS. Both victims of having fired with the wrong ammo. IIRC one was a 7mm REM mag that had a 270 winchester fired in it.

At the Cave City Ky gunshow back in late nov or early dec.
Their were 5 or 6 boat paddle rugers spread amongst various table.
Must havr be a regional thing back when was all I could figure.
I do about a 200 mile/ 3hr radius of the shows around clarksville
Might see 1 or 2 in other shows.
Or none at all.
Just struck me a unusual that amount of them at one show in fairly rural location up by Mammoth cave national park area.
