How do you be born of water, Happy? I wouldnt say it means to be baptized as He said one can be baptized by Fire.

Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.

Let's look at the reference in John 3 and study the context.

"There was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews:

2 The same came to Jesus by night, and said unto him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him.

3 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.

4 Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother's womb, and be born?

5 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.

6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.

7 Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.

8 The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.

9 Nicodemus answered and said unto him, How can these things be?

Someone asked me that years ago and I looked at the reference to water and what that phrase refers to.

In short, my options were :
A. Water baptism
B. Water of the Word
C. Amniotic water

First was baptism. I read and reread the conversation and can't see any mention of water baptism.here. I don't want to read something into the conversation that isn't taught by Christ.

B. Water of the word comes to mind as a cross reference from
Ephesians 5:26
"That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word..."
This was taught by Paul many years later to the Church of Ephesus, so in all honesty isn't something that Jeeshsus would expect Nicodemus to understand would he?

C. As much as I tried to see this from other perspectives, I put myself in Nicodemus' shoes and try to understand what is Jesus talking about?
First birth is of the flesh is flesh"...vs 6
Born of the mother is her child to explain.

That which is of the Spirit is spirit.
This is the second, spiritual birth.

First birth is from Mom......born when her water breaks.
Born again is of the Spirit....born of the Spirit by verses 14-18.
Jesus is lifted up on the cross as the serpent was on the pole representing Him taking on the sins of the world. He was not condemning the world, but dying in our place. Whosoever believes in Him/ Jesus....verses 16, 17, 18 has everlasting life. Believing is the key that makes the spiritual birth possible.
That's what I thought then and still makes sense to me.

The time baptism is mentioned is at a different place when the next paragraph Jesus and His disciples meet John the Baptist in Judea.

A couple of other times He spoke of salvation comes to mind.

"Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life."

John 6:47 and then 63...

"It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.
But there are some of you that believe not."

Again the spirit that quickeneth meaning make alive. Again think of the spiritual birth. What was the condition here?
Believing or believing not.

As to baptism, that doesn't come up here in regards to salvation. I think you might be remembering a passage in
Acts 1 "For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence."

Or maybe Matthew 3?

" I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire: Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and gather his wheat into the garner; but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire."

This was a mixed group of believers who were already saved and going to get baptized. The pharisees who rejected their Messiah/Christ would be baptized with "unquenchable fire."

That can be a confusing passage until we see that sometimes Jesus is preaching to a mixed crowd.
