Hi and thanks for posting,
Like many of you, I am waiting for a Montana Short Action, it looks like it won't be too long now........Does anyone know of a good stock, something like an HS stock that will work as close to a "drop in" as possible. (I am sure some of you are using their long actions.)
I know it will have to be bedded, but the inletting part frightens me. I have 2 projects going on and want to keep the labor costs down. I am having Montana barrel it for me, and I wanted to try the stock work myself.
Thanks Frank D

According to Dan @ MRC and our own Rick Bin, a M70 stock should work with some minor inletting required. (At least I hope so .... 'cause that's what I'm a orderin')

It is also rumored that Mark is going to start building his rifles on the MRC actions.

I called MRC yesterday they are up to 540 on the SA orders . Can any of you guys tell me where I can get one of there actions skeletonized they wont do it . I like how the REM TI has it done and that is what I am looking for. Believe it or not I live in the biggest city in the country and there is not a decent gun shop within 100 miles of this place. I was thinking of making a 270 wsm and a 338 wsm with these actions still have a lot of research to do though.

wildone,
On skeletenizing the 1999. You could contact Jack Belk. He hangs out at HuntAmerican.com Jack wrote a critique on that action and he has worked on them. He likes one off projects. I would bet however that he does not suggest it and neither would I for safety reasons. I have no specific facts. My comments are just my opinion.
Of course some weight could come off. I would start with a blind magazine, no floor plate and a Bansner stock. That might save 1 1/2 lbs.

I assume you are wanting to save some weight on the .270. What kind of weight are you looking for as a finished rifle?
Do you know what the MRC action weighs? (complete w/bottom metal, trigger, all screws) I think I saw something like 40 oz. on another thread, but I could not find the thread again. Skeletonizing that style of action is not common. I may have a reccomendation for you, but depending upon the weight you have in mind, you may not need it.

Don Thank you for the name ........
Jim ... I think I know what you are gonna tell me ......Just buy the dam remington TI and be happy with the long action .... by the way the .284 looks sweet....he he , I am looking to be in the 6.5 lb mark all said an done euro glass and all. I just happen to like the .496 BC on that 150 gr. BT, calliber and its stats out to 500 . I think I remember it to be 48 oz I may be wrong though Jim. The 257 roy is a flat shooter as well I just think the beans are a little to light and I don't want a 26 in tube which it seems to like. In a nut shell this is what it comes down to for me , I am looking for a flat shooting gun with good energy out to 500, with bullet weights up to around 150 - 160 ish in a light weight mountain design around above mentioned weight and a 22-24 inch tube. I am not crazy about the specs of the 7-08 at all they don't impress me a bit .

wildone,
If you are open to non-factory rounds (wildcats) I can recommend the 6.5-06. Shoot 140's with high BC's and get the velocity you are probalbly looking for. It is listedd in the Sierra manual. Only down side is it is a long action.
Just a thought that did not cost you anything and may be worth just as much.
..pick..

Actually, I wasn't gonna tell you that. Heck, since you have the Montana, I figured you (might) wanna use it....But!!
You goal of 6.5 lb scoped, in a Magnum caliber (and) with Euro glass is going to be tough with that action. If you hit all the components just right, you might just get there.
You are going to have to accept a very light barrel (no #2's or #3's) I'm not sure what the Montana weighs but you will certainly have to go blind mag w/alloy guard. You probably will have to mill the action. You will probably have to go with the light pad on a Bansner. You'll have to go with the smaller of the Euro scopes (3x9 about max)
I think you can get there, but your want list is prohibitive.

Jim ...I did not mean to come across sarcastic or negative, I hope you did not take it that way , I appreciate your input greatly you are much more in tune with this than I am . I don't have the montana it was just a sugestion from Don Martin as one of the available action that are easily bought without having to cruise the used gun Isle. I don't have anything at this point because I keep learning more and more about different calibers , just by reading these threads on the campfire. I originally was thinking of building a sub 5 lb 7mm rem mag but after speaking to you and others here on the site I decided that may not be the wisest choice from a recoil stand point hence the 270 wsm. I am still in the research stage and will be looking at this and starting from scratch. I have a million questions I need answered before I can even start this . I have question on the action obviously , the trigger the tube , and the stock, as well as a good smith. Like I stated above I have been a bow hunter for many years so all this is a learning process.

No, I didn't take it that way at all.....
Somehow, I made the mental leap that you already had the Montana. Since you don't, you are in better shape than I thought. 6 1/2 lb. all up for a magnum is do-able, you just don't get any "luxuries" (like #2 barrels)(or heavy actions)
Now about those heavy ass Euro scopes........... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
BTW: have you heard about this thing from Remington called the Ti??..... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
