The snipers had a longer bolt handle welded on. The snipers were normally a very well built rifle. More time and care was gave to them compared to a average combat rifle.

Never thought of milling the slot. I know Bannerman when they converted to .30-06 went the hard way route.

This is how I normally do bent down bolt handles on Mosins. It works well and clears the receiver scope mounts too and I use the knob from the factory bolt.

Here is my Finnish rework of the M91.



The Finns took captured M91s, and put on new stocks, barrels, and sights. Really a nice and accurate rifle. This one is by VKT, remanufactured in 1941. Sako and Tikka also made reworked Mosins there in Finland.



The front sight is adjustable. The rifle was originally made in Russia in 1895. With an antique receiver, this rifle is legally an antique and not subject to Federal firearms restrictions.
By Federal law, this rifle is the same as a muzzle loader.

Got my Polish 44 Carbine back when they were $79 bucks.
I was impressed with the accuracy even with the surplus ammo. They will do a number on feral hogs.

Who would've thought Mosins would get as expensive as they have? I gave 75 bucks for my Romanian M44 and 80 for my Tula 91-30.
