Here's my late 1990s (No Key Lock) Mountain Gun in .45 ACP/AR. These things have gone to the moon, pricewise, since I bought it new.

Nice gun.

There’s a recall though to add the lockable safety right above the cylinder release. You can’t be too safe ya know?

I really like that revolver. 👍 Would love to have one, but the prices now are just silly.

I remember when we all thought $1,200.00 for a Colt Python was through the roof. Then they hit $1,800.00, then over $2,000.00. Looks like pre-lock (and even more so, pre-82) S&W revolvers are follow the same course now.

I paid $235 for a new S&W Model 27-2 in 1975. A new 1975 Corvette convertible, well equipped (air conditioning, power windows, engine upgrade, etc ) was about $8000.

That same 27-2 in NIB condition goes for about $1800 today. A 2022 Corvette goes for a minimum of $61,000. That’s a price difference/increase of 77% in both cases. Sure, guns have gone up. So has my house value and other things.

If you like guns to keep and shoot, and can afford it, buy what you want and quit worrying over “a deal.” You’ll be happier in the long run, and find you really didn’t take a financial hit.

I have a 629-2 Mountain Gun, but the boys tell me it's a "pre-Mountain Gun" because it's got the whole configuration, but doesn't say "mountain gun" on it anywhere.

If you want to see crazy prices start studying the Lou Horton 3" N Frames. Some of those are getting $2500.

That would likely sell for even more, due to more collector interest.

It seems all the old Lew Horton special runs are bringing top dollar.

Like one of these? I gave $400 with box and tools in 2004. One of the boys will get it...

I bought this M657 at Cabela's in Buda TX probably 8 years ago. It was ugly to me but was priced at $600. OK, so it came home. I sent the data into S&W for a letter as I had not ever seen one on the various sites. A letter was received indicating it was a Lew Horton run of 3560 units with a second group receiving "light machine engraving", of which 70 were made. Mine is 1 of the 70 per the letter. It left the factory July 23, 1998 per the letter.

Here shown with the original grips swapped out for Ahrend's.

Being a .41 magnum slut, I would jump on that with both feet- “light machine engraving” and all.

I am a revolver guy in a Glock world
Don’t get me wrong love my Glocks but they will never excite me like a revolver

That being said I have the benefit of buying revolvers for the last 35 years
My true faves model 57
28 and 27
I LOVE N frames all of them
I have a 586 no dash it’s my go to 357
Among other older models
So I have a few older Smiths

But once in a while they come up with something new that I like
IE 929 69 and others

I would buy one and have and have enjoyed them for sure

But no question a nice older xx
And a new manufacture. Xx same model I would be likely to take the older pre loved one
