Had to post this year's buck with my handy little rifle when I saw the topic was started by a Vermonter and there was talk of pump guns and see thru mounts!

Savage 1899A short rifle in 303 Savage. Balance and pointability is just about perfect. The accuracy isn't too shabby, either.

I havfe five “handy” centerfire rifles that are all light and convenient to trail carry. They balance well one handed or two while walking. All of the shoulder quickly and to my natural POA.
#1- HandiRifle in .357 magnum with factory open sights. I bought and tried a Williams aperture rear sight, but I need a different front sight to get it adjusted properly.
#2- Marlin 1894S in .44 magnum with Williams aperture rear sight.
#3- Ruger M77 Hawkeye in .338 RCM with factory open sights.
#4- Ruger GSR with laminated stock and factory aperture rear sight and post front sight.
#5- Marlin 444Marlin with Williams aperture rear sight.
As you see, they are all mostly stock from the factory and NONE have a scope! Adding stuff beyond a sling and maybe an ammo butt cuff, throw off the balance and add a lot of weight unnecessarily, imo.

Old beat up Vanguard .243 that'll shoot nickel groups at a 100yds using 100gr Core-Lokt ammo. Has a Timney 3 position trigger set at 20oz, trued and bedded action. It's not a lightweight but a very handy truck and tractor gun that'll shoot circles around my 35 Marlin.
Life is good live it while you can.

Spiffy, what did that butt stock come off of? Doesn't look "OEM". The stock is the OEM but I went at it with a rasp until my eye lined up perfectly behind the Williams peep. I also shimmed a touch of cast off into it. Now I like a scope because my eyesight is not what it was. It's still almost perfect for the scout scope but I bought another butt stock that I'm going to rasp down until it's perfect for the scope. I've aslo, always loved a straight grip especially on a gun that's carried more than shot. And, I removed the butt plate and drilled a couple of long holes up into it to reduce weight. It's a 30 06 with 18 1/2 inch barrel. Very handy and super quick but, a little too heavy with the scope.

Those Brown Precision stocks are my favourite. While for some, the 18.5" bbls work well, they are too short for me preferring 20" as a minimum for better handling. I have this Sportsman 78 in 308 that may get a 2" bob after a tryout this fall. The stock is a Brown as well.

I have a bunch, but a few I can’t leave out of this post. These seem to be the ones carried the most. I have a Mauser 12 that despite its cost I’m really liking a lot! M7 MS in 308 with W. German 4x Zeiss (100% factory) AO built 7-08 at 21” hart #3 barrel, 700 BLD, Timney, Manners EH8 built by Accurate Ordnance M7 KS in 7-08 Zeiss Diavari C 3-9 (factory but lipstick and bolt fluting by Karl) https://imgur.com/a/15BbWHb

Remington 700Ti in 7-08 wish I had never sold it.
I may not be smart but I can lift heavy objects
I have a shotgun so I have no need for a 30-06.....

Like Memtb, I'm thinking something a bit larger bore, 375 H&H in my case. The Ruger Number One is surprisingly short and very well balanced. Even with a 24" barrel, it's about as long overall as a 20" barreled Browning BLR... I've used mine to shoot three black bear from 306 yards down to about 15 feet. That short range situation was a little hairy, so to speak. The Ruger handles nicely, is accurate and packs a pretty good punch. I like it. It's amazing how fast it can be reloaded with a little practice and a lot of adrenaline. Regards, Guy Love it
