Talked to a guy in grocery store today that I bought a BP rifle from 5-6 years ago, wants to sell me the rest of his supplies, I've not looked at it but he says he has several lbs of black powder. Since I don't know how long he has had it I don't know how to value it, says he he has 2f, 4f. does it go bad? has a couple lbs of pyrodex That i'm not interested in. don't know brands but i think GOEX ,and probably partial cans any idea how to value it.

Buy the BP,not the Pyrodex. BP does not go bad. Even if it gerts wet it can dry out. Some have not had problems with Pyrodex or 777. I have had problems with both of them degrading. Unles it is a flintlock, I don't think you will use the 4f. Others can tell you for sure.I would offer 25% off retail for the BP

I tried 20 year old Pyrodex in Dec. Hang-fires every time. Switched to 4 year old BP and hang-fires disappeared.

Nothing really new to add, other than agreement.
As others have said, 777 and P can go funky, even in unopened containers. Once it has been damp and gets clumpy, it's never the same. I washed my hands of that crap ages ago. All B209 or the real stuff for me now.
Never had any of the real stuff not go bang, regardless of age. I know the Swiss 2F I still have is pushing 20 years old, and I still know I could shoot it tomorrow with no problems.

I'm seeing some substitutes on store shelves, but if it's the real deal, I'd buy it. Might get scarce as well with one of the producers blowing up their facility recently.

BP is the most stable of all the propellants you can get, from what I understand.

the only time that Black Powder's brisance is compromised is due to moisture. even damp it will burn. people in the 20th century were killed by civil war artillery shells exploding. haven't heard of any in the 21st century yet, but its young yet!
