Tampa is now officially safe from elephants, cape buffalo, lions and grizzly bears. I have finally gotten off my duff and loaded up some ammo for my 416 Howell. I am using 70 grains of IMR 4320, 400 grain Hornady RNs and Remington 9 primers on reformed Norma 404 Jeffery brass.

I did have some issues with my Lee Auto Prime. I had to open up both the shell holder and the Auto Prime itself with the Dremel. I was having a hard time getting the shell into the Auto Prime and getting the primer pocket to line up with the primer seating stem. After careful grinding of both the shell holder and the Auto Prime body itself everything went smooth.

I am going to go to the range on Saturday, if weather permits and will fire form the brass and get some velocity readings.

I am very excited about this. I think I am going to try to take a deer and a hog with rifle this year.

Whatta mean... "if weather permits"???

You live in Florida right? How bad can it be?

Interesting stuff there, about modifying the shell holder.

By the way, you've joined an elite crowd. That being, those of us who defend entire townships, even entire states, against the evil of rampant large dangerous game. Little do our neighbors know of our great sacrifice, but we carry on quitely and humbly, keeping our yards free of elephants and other nasty critters.

Your doing better than me though, as I've yet to rid Baranof Island of those nasty bears.

It may rain. I just got here from CA (I have been in Tampa around 18 months) and I am not used to rain in the summer.

It would get pretty expensive to rid Baranof Island of the bears. That is a lot of powder and bullets.

When I first started doing "gun stuff" I would never of thought to modify stuff, I would have just bought some thing new or become discouraged. Everthing that I have read here has gotten me interested in getting things to work (or to at least try.)

I braved the rain today and went to the range. I was shocked at the "minimal" amount of recoil this rifle has. I shot 21 rounds from the bench, the rules of this range, and had no problems with the perceived recoil. I did use a sissy pad, Past Magnum shoulder pad. The recoil felt less than my 30-06 with the factory stock. I love this rifle. [color:"red"] Bambis Dad is in trouble this year. [/color] I shot a 1 to 1.5 inch, measured by my Mk I Mod I eyeball, group.
