For years I had wanted to go on a Musk Ox hunt, but I had lived and worked enough in -30 F temperatures, that I wasn't excited about hunting in those conditions. Then I learned about a fall combination hunt for Central Canadian Barren Ground Caribou and Musk Ox in northern Northwest Territories, so I booked it.

It turned out to have been one of my best hunts. Temps got below freezing at night, but not ridiculously cold below zero. There were four hunters in camp, we all shot two caribou, and I think we each shot a B&C bull. I also shot a great Musk Ox bull that also made B&C.

One night I went outside to "water a bush" and stayed out there for a half an hour watching the best Northern Lights display that I have ever seen.

I brought both of my sets of Caribou horns, both Caribou capes, the Musk Ox skull and his full skin home with me. The box containing the capes and skin was so big and heavy that the girls in the Inuvik airport couldn't lift it onto the conveyor and asked me to do it. I also brought a cooler home full of 50# of Musk Ox and Caribou meat. They charged me an extra $25 for the box of hides, the antlers, and the cooler full of meat! Later at a dinner at home, I remember commenting to my girlfriend that we could possibly be the only 2 people in the world eating Musk Ox tacos that night.

Nice pic T Inman!

I ran into 5? bulls up the Noatak River from Kotzebue. There were about a dozen cows and calves a half mile away.

One was off by himself a bit, and as they ran from me, he tried to join up with the rest. Tail-end Charlie of the other bulls kept turning around and facing off with him. I have no idea what the issue was, unless it was just pecking order.

It was a fun mile or more stalk to get up within camera range - maybe 100 yards - and fun watching the face-offs.

Them things are mighty good eats!
