I think the finish is a turn off for many, the blind magazine, some of the stocks were birch or piss elm, and just the bad press from that era when the gunwriters just had kittens over anything post 64. None of that bothers me...it is a model 70 action and safety, a foolproof model 70 trigger and best of all IMO the absolutely superb hammer forged barrels, which have never disappointed me.

Well this is a fine pickle we're in, should'a listened to Joe McCarthy and George Orwell I guess.

I just bought one in a 300WM simply because it filled a spot in my model 70 collection. That said, at least on mine the bolt and safety are different than a model 70. The safety is a 2 position slide or rocker safety on the right side of the bolt shroud.

Yeah, I never did figure out when or why they went slider safety, I have 5 rifles, 3 are 2 position wing safety, and 2 are 3 position wing safety. There are 770's...670A's, it's all greek to me.

I thought the 670 I was looking at had three positions?

It likely did. I can see no rhyme nor reason as to serial number and what came with what. Factory floor manager to flunky, "we are running low on 2 position parts...go get a cart load of 3 position parts off the model 70 line." Who knows?

Good to know! Thanks.

I just am enamored with the quality iron sights and reedicously low price.

But how many 3006 does a guy need?

I am beginning to think I own more than I got Haynes briefs.

Is that wrong? I hope not.

The one I had could put 5 180 Nosler PT in practically the same hole at 100 yards. With thrown together loads it was never over an inch. The only difference I could see at the time when compared to the Mod 70 was the 670 had a blind magazine and didn't have a shiny finish.

I bought mine out of the back of a trunk at a gun show in 1987. It looked like it had been dragged by a log chain off the back bumper. The guy told me he and his brothers had been sharing it for 10 years and sent him to town to sell it so they could get something better. I spent the winter cleaning it up and found it was an extremely accurate rifle. This was my favorite long-distance whitetail whomper until I coughed it up to #3 son about 8 years ago. He's in love with it.

I called mine the .30 Briar Light Magnum.

Meanwhile, #2 son, Moose, was gifted a 570 (same but rarer) that had been a closet queen in some grandpa's bedroom. I cleaned some surface rust off and gave it to him. Both guys have never really thought about another deer rifle since.

I have a M670 .30-06 carbine with the side safety. Shoots great.
