Hi,

Let me know if this method of cleaning my 99 is crazy. I came up with it because I don't own a rifle vice or a bore snake.

1. Put a patch in the chamber, close the action, clean from the muzzle end using a muzzle guide and rod.

2. When finished removed the patch from the chamber.

My only concern, which has nothing to do with the method, is that i have to insert the jag and patch before the muzzle guide since together they don't fit through the guide.

Thanks,

Bob

That will surely work, and it's a good method for periodic cleaning & lubricating, but I'd recommend dropping $12 for a Boresnake. Nothing easier, I run one through after every shooting session.

You may want to check out Otis I've used one for 3-4 years.

I have the bore snake but find it doesn't get out all the copper out which has great effect on accuracy. I clean from the front end but insert the rod/patch so slowly thru the crown. I also clean the rifle upside down so fluids don't drain into the action.

I open the action and lay a 6x6" piece of old t-shirt over receiver sides draped down over the follower-rotary mag.

This keeps dirt, grit, solvent etc out of the magazine and off the metal of the action.

Then using a bore guide, insert the cleaning rod with either patch holder, jag or brush and push down to the open action.
Then I apply whatever solvent I'm using with a small squeeze bottle and pull back into the bore and stroke-clean, removing via the muzzle to change the dirty patch etc.

Repeat until clean.
Swap chamber with dry mop ( like a .410 shotgun barrel mop) or patch and if storing, lightly oil the bore.Jim
