I'm taking the youngest to see the old family stomping grounds down the coast next week. We're flying into IAH, then heading West & South before looping back. I figured we might do dinner on our way out to the hinterlands.
Anything especially good in that part of town? He's a college student, so I'm sure Whataburger would make him plenty happy. Still, I figure the area might have several quality beef, seafood, or Messican opportunities.
Anywhere that's not to be missed?
Thanks in advance,
FC

Pappadeaux Seafood Kitchen. They have a dish called the Pontchartrain that is dynamite. They also have a Blackened Mahi Alexander with shrimp and crawfish, topped with a white wine cream sauce; and the Pappadeaux Seafood Platter is a mountain of different kinds of fried seafood.
For Tex-Mex, Pappasito’s Cantina is good too.
Every day on this side of the ground is a win.

I still remember a meal @ Pappaeaux from 1996, or thereabouts. Yeah, it was that good! Thanks, FC

I’d pick Pappacitos over Lupe Tortilla 10 times out of 10. But, look for a Chuy’s for good Mexican food. Perry’s has good steaks, and their Calamari appetizer is delicious. I’d go to Pappadeaux for seafood, or even better is the Redfish Seafood Grill on Hwy 249. And they also have terrific Sushi.
We used to live in NW Houston. I think if we made a trip back there for a weekend, we’d go to the Redfish Seafood Grill. Great food.

Check out Captain Brad's on Hwy 249.

Lupe Tortilla - multiple locations Taste of Texas (West, not NW) I second Lupe tortillas and Pappacitos.

Top Water Grill Seafood in San Leon puts all of them to shame.
If you patronize Taste of Texas (I was very not impressed), you’d better be there at least an hour before they open.
For simplicity, Whataburger cannot be beat.

For Tex-Mex, Pappasito’s Cantina is good too. I second that! Been to the Pappadeaux's Kitchen just off Forest Park and IH30 near downtown. For a "chain", their seafood is right up there with Guido's. In fact, the last time I was at Guido's, it was in Corpus Christi and was mediocre at best. Stuffed flounder had barely a tablespoon of dressing and the scallops were cool inside and watery. For superb "Mexican" food in Fort Worth, try "La Playa Maya" out on North Main between downtown and The Stockyards. I've eaten at "Pappasito's" in Fort Worth. It was definitely good, but it can't hold a candle to "La Playa Maya".

Not dissing Pappadeaux's, but the one in N. Cinci is good.
An opportunity to try something else while in Houston?

We’ve found that every Pappas family owned restaurant we’ve eaten at has been extremely good.

An opportunity to try something else while in Houston? Last time I was in Houston was in 1979. My most favorite thing about Houston, Texas is the northbound lane of IH45! I despise Houston even more than I despise Dallas. Of all the metro areas in Texas, Fort Worth is the only one I'll venture into.

Beef fajitas - Lupes can’t be beat! Pappasitos for everything else though!
Whataburger has a cult-like following down here... I eat there maybe once a year when no better choices around. Its a fast food burger and they ain’t fast!
Steak - Eddie V’s (excellent steak and seafood), Capital Grille, Taste of Texas, Perry’s, Flemings all within about a mile of I10 and Beltway 8. My personal favorites are Pappas Bros (downtown and Galleria area) and Del Frisco’s (Galleria area).
Seafood, Pappadeaux is the prob the best choice without going to Kemah or Galveston I personally believe. I prefer Pappas Seafood to Pappadeaux myself, but not many left for some reason)
Barbecue - In town (Pinkertons, Truth, Pit Room, Feges), out west (Bretts, Roegels), Cypress (Brooks Place - give you a discount if you have your concealed carry license - havent tried but been meaning to), South (Killens).
There are lots of other non-chain places that are excellent but not very familiar with what’s in NW Houston myself.
