In the past, once a year or so, I used to see someone putting gas in their car, then when the pump is off, drain the gas left in the hose in their tank before driving off. I’m pretty sure it is considered theft in New Mexico and Colorado.
I have seen this happen 4 times in the last 10 days or so. One was a “lady” driving a late model Lexus!
At $4/gallon, I think this is stealing 25 to 50 cents from the next person to use that pump.
Have you seen this behavior recently?

The gas is metered before it gets to the hose. You’ve paid for.

My Dad.
Try it sometime, when filling a jug. Pay attention to what comes out. You will never consider being seen as such a cheap, chisling SOB again.
Nothing comes out. It's airlocked. There are reasons the lines come from overhead, one is to airlock the hose so it won't drain.
Bet you have seen the numbers run before you pump either. If someone drained the hose, and you paid for that gas, you Would see a quantity displayed as soon a the pump kicked on. Old, analog, side hose pumps would do that. The pumps from the last 20+ years wont.

Theft? Bullshit. I’ve been draining the hose for 40 years.

Hell, I hadn’t even thought about draining the hose on a modern gas pump. When I was a kid, we had a 350 gallon tank at the shop with a hand crank. It was SOP to grab the hose and lift it up t drain it. But then that hose would have set long enough for the gas left in there to evaporate. Considering the placement of a fuel hose in relation to a vehicle fuel tank, I can’t see more than a few ounces being trapped, maybe 6 or 8 at tops. As gas prices and everything else go spiraling up, it’s bound to bring out the azzhole in everybody. If 6 or 8 ounces of gas is gonna make or break you, you have my pity and I won’t begrudge you the fuel! 7mm

Had a friend that did that all the time. I've always figured if it got to that point I could certainly walk the extra 15 yards........

This^^^ I could drink what comes out of a gas pump hose after you turn the pump off. If it were diamonds coming out of the hose it would be pretty inconsequential. I actually prefer someone drain it. That way it doesn’t drip on my bike’s tank. Now the SOB that locks the trigger down and then hangs the pump handle back up needs killing.

The valve is in the handle, so they are only getting what's between the valve and the nozzle that didn't already drain into the tank... a handful of drops at most.

Guy I knew in Maine used to keep a cardboard case of beer in the bed of his truck.
Kept noticing a few beers missing.
Set a Duke 110 in the half empty case of beers...
Problem solved itself.

Long ago, I read something about the small amount of gas that people let dribble away when they remove the nozzle from the vehicle. Multiplied by the number of fills in the U.S. during a day, it added up to an impressive amount of gas.

Theft? Bullshit. I’ve been draining the hose for 40 years. Ever since the OPEC shortages of the 70's. It's in the hose...................................................and I can get it out.......................................................It's MINE! Besides, less chance of a drip on the side of the truck that gets washed once a year whether it needs it or not.

A lot of you are talking out of your ass regarding new pumps.
If the person before you had the nozzle trip out the pump, the entire hose is full of gas. All you need to do to drain 8+ additional ounces from the hose (or more), is to lower the hose and pull the nozzle handle. In goes air, out comes gas.

Have you ever pulled a straw out of your arse?
Stick it in water, cover the top. Lift it out.
That, is a hose with the valve open.
How much is coming out.
You need to get the hose level to get the air in. The hose is attached 6+foot up.
Gotta laugh at the justification for being a schidtbag theif. Fits right in with the liar or the if thread.
If you go out of your way to drwin the hose, to get extra gas, You are a the If. Either from the next guy, or the station, either way, You aren't being rewarded for your unimaginable ingenuity.
YOU ARE SCAMMING.
Scammster, I might have been around a couple fuel dispensers. Replaced hoses, opened them up and helped repair them. Hauled a tens of millions of gallons of the product too. Fuel stations aren't unfamiliar.
