Many people have owned tiger oscars and had them in their fish tanks. I had some many years ago and they are an interesting aggressive fish to raise. When I went on my recent trip to the Everglades I knew there were some living there, and that they grew to some impressive sizes. I wanted one real bad and didn't know if I would catch any or not. I need not have worried, I ended up catching dozens and dozens of them, but this one was one of the prettiest of the trip. That bright orange against the dark color of the rest of the fish is just absolutely stunning. I never got tired of catching them. They fight extremely hard and aggressively take a fly or a jig. The one big surprise is how fast they are. They are like lightening fast and usually beat any other species (including the peacock bass) to the fly or jig. They are just absolutely a cool fish!
Is it Friday yet?

We had Oscars years ago in a big tank and I clipped the hook off a crappie jig and they would knock the heck outta that thing when I dropped it in the tank.

Anybody ever catch a Texas Cichlid? They are the only native US fish of the same family as those oscars and supposedly have naturalized in various areas of the country. Ive never caught one although they are supposed to be found in a couple of places in CA. I have caught native cichlids in Mexico but they were a long way from CA (or Texas for that matter). Down there they call them "perch".

Are you allowed to release them?
Quite a few invasives are legal to catch but illegal to release, if I recall.

taste like grouper or orange ruffy. back in the dark ages i had a 200 gallon tank. had 240 Tropicals in it of every type. they all got along and maintained the tank by themselves. next to it i had a 50g tank. with one tiger Oscar in it. fed him the surplus spawn from the community tank. got drunk one night and caught two dozen night crawlers on the lawn after a rain. started feeding them to Oscar. he ate all 24. had a few trying to escape through his gills but quickly disposed of them. my favorite exotic fish.

My buddy had a 55gal that he had an oscar in. It was about 8" long or so. I had a spawning pair of convict cichlids which were only about 3" long and my buddy told me I could put them in with his oscar but he thought the oscar might eat them, tried telling him that he should be worried about his fish. Next morning that oscar was dead, the convicts killed it.

I used to have an Oscar named Luther.
