I grew up watching Buddy Werner ski in Colorado. He was world champion caliber and a member of the US Ski Team. He died trying to outrace an avalanche and escape in 1964. Think it was in France.

Best I remember......Pirmin Zurbriggen........Had won in all 5 disciplines at different times......but the 1988 Olympic Downhill final was amazing IIRC ....he ran it last. First skier down with the best course set the standard. Zurbriggen was last. Everything too rough to possibly make a run. Can still see it. Hanging it out all the way down. Like Juan Fangio in his crazy best. Taking too many chances and thru skill and guts getting away with it. Always on the edge. The first skier was walking away ......sure of victory. He was stunned. Look on his face says it all in the Video Just the greatest run I ever saw.
When you call to your gods.......and they answer...
Klammer was awesome. As a Texas kid w no knowledge of snow skiing and winter sports, I’d make time to watch him. Seemed he dominated for quite some time.
I was always a fan of Franz Weber. Held the record for fastest man on skis for quite some time. 138mph IIRC. That's been blown away by new technology and better physically trained athletes by 20mph now.
Met the Mahre bros - they're good and Bill Johnson...he's good too. But Bode Miller is probably the best American skier.
Ingemar Stenmark, IMHO, is the best there ever was. He just dominated. Hirsher and Herrman Maier a close second.
Best American racer and all around athlete - Bode Miller
Will be the best American racer - Mikaela Shiffrin. Sure, she hasn’t had a great olympics, but she dominates Slalom and Giant Slalom and wins downhill and super G. She is an amazing talent, and a good person.
Franz Klammer and the Downhill in 1976. Fantastic run!
I lived in Steamboat Springs one year. Buddy Werner was from Steamboat and they named the mountain after him. The theme in Steamboat is "cowboy skiing" and Billy Kidd lived there, you could see him skiing down Mt. Werner, wearing his cowboy hat.
