I have seen the Hornady 55 grain with cannelure mentioned several times as being a good deer bullet and was wondering if the 55 grain without the cannelure is as good?

Same here..I can't tell a difference in the way they shoot...same POI. That said Ive never used the one without cannelure on game...but I sure can't see why it wouldnt behave just as well.

Can't remember where I read it or who might have said it, so I don't know if it has any credibility. But it was stated that non cannelured ones held together better on deer sized animals. They were talking hornady's, might just be bs...mb

MB, I heard the same thing. The explanation I read was that the cannelure weakened the jacket and therefore the bullet lost integrity and broke apart more. I don’t know but I have dug enough other bullets out of stuff and seen them sheared of at the cannelures causing them to lose more weight that that sounds plausible . Whether or not this is enough to make it less effective on deer sized game I also don’t know. I have shot exactly three deer ( that I can remember ) with the regular 55 horn sp ( no cannelure) and they were all under the far side hide perfectly expanded all the way to the base but still together. Shots were about 100 yards or so from a 14” twist 22-250. I’ve shot other deer with the 60 grainer and it always shot clear through ( same rifle). I’ve got about 4000 of the 55sp w/ cannelure and I plan on seeing how they do whenever I can get around to it.
