I'd gotten my old 840 in .222 to shoot decent, but never great, and decided to do some more load fiddling with it over the winter. We finally had a calm day, so I took it out and found what I was looking for... 5 shots at 100 with 30gr Varmint Grenades over CFE BLK. The flier was me, I am both shaky, and flinchy... flinched that one 🤷‍♂️

I am strongly considering trying to dig up a FP peep for it, though, because that high scope mount is just awkward to line up on.

Sometimes old and cheap turns out good. Congrats on working it out!

The 840 and the 340 have always had reputation for being accurate despite its price tag. Scope mounting is its biggest short-coming. The weaver mount keeps the scope fairly low but you need an older scope with a small ocular end. The other mounts put the scope way to high, you can put a comb riser on the stock to compensate for this. Here is a pic of my 222 with the weaver mount, if look close you can see where the bolt handle has rubbed against the scope when I work the bolt fast.

Thanks, it wasn't horrible before, but I was surprised I got it to tighten up that well. I'd been sidetracked by my 99s and a 1873 Win repro the last couple years, so I hadn't really messed with loads much for it since shortly after I bought it.

I got it for a song a few years back from a guy my Dad knows because it "wouldn't shoot straight." Turns out it's a 1-16 twist barrel, so it just scatters 50gr factory Remington green box ammo all over the paper, and that's what the guy had been shooting from it.

That's a straight 10x40mm with high rings on mine. I had tried lows and mediums, but the bolt handle wouldn't clear the tube with the lower rings. I was gonna put a K8 on it, but they were discontinued.

It is a fun little cartridge. Got a bit more snap than the little guys, but not the blast of the bigger varmint rounds.

I've had a couple of 218 Bees, a 22-250, and a 22 Hornet in the past, but this is currently my only centerfire varmint rifle. Those little 30 grainers really drop off fast past about 150 yards, but they're flat nasty on ground squirrels out to 125 or so. I pasted quite a few of them a couple summers ago out at a friend's farm.
