If you could take just one, which would you choose? Both in equal condition and price. An early 50's standard grade model 70 in .257 Roberts or a '63 300 Win. Mag. BCM
Boxcarman: I personally would make EVERY effort to acquire both those Rifles! But if push came to shove and I was/am a "collector" (not a Deer Hunter) I would have to opt for the "similar conditioned" Standard Rifle in 300 Winchester Magnum. Rarity getting the slight nod there. Best of luck to you and I really hope you can tag and bag both those Rifles. Hold into the wind VarmintGuy

Definitely the Roberts. Far more valuable, interesting, and fun to shoot. A 9lb rifle is not anything I'd hunt with anywhere except out of a treestand, so the weight is irrelevant.

The Roberts....
Ex- USN (SS) '66-'69 Pro-Constitution. LET'S GO BRANDON!!!
.300 for sure. Never like the Roberts.. (9# isn't that bad. Most of mine are about there. I never owned one of the plastic light wt. rifles so loved today.. One mountain rifle was enough for me.
I'm with the "both" crowd, de facto as owning both! But if just one, the 300 Win Mag, hands down. Made only in that last year of "Pre '64 production chambering. To my recollection going back some years, as then considerably more valuable. I'm not a big fan of the 257 Roberts cartridge. My single "Standard Grade from fifties"; as 1950. Genuine "beater"! Ridden hard and put away wet! Bought ultra cheap in eighties era & stowed! A couple of .257 Supergrades of earlier vintage in the stable. Pix of the two subject choice rifles below. Fifth, as gratuitous pix of my 'favored' Model 70 if to be in .257. From 1946, Supergrade absolutely non-original as D&T plus happily long LOP achieved with non-original "Winchester" pad & spacer. "As found." Srock fits me great!
As Mooshoo's aside, a 'me too'. Preferring a Prewar "300 Magnum", then defining the .300 H&H! My specimen of 1940 vintage.
Am I choosing as a collector or shooter? Or as trade bait for something I really want?
Neither do much for me personally.
If forced I’d probably go Roberts due to better checkering and likely better wood.
As you know, I'm not the OP, but have a question: The OP emailed me with some pictures and questions regarding the rifle. The rifle is a first year 300H&H (1937) with a low 10,000 serial #. How would you feel about such a rifle? She's pretty clean too, but drilled and tapped. Out of respect to the OP and seller he asked that I not post the pics. So the question goes out to Iskra/John as well. I wish you guys could see pics of the rifle, but I understand the OP's feeling on this.

That’s quite a bit different than a ‘63 win mag. I’d take the pre war h&h without thinking twice.
Thanks buddy. I'm sure the OP will appreciate that feedback. I feel the same as you. I'm not a huge fan of the 300 win mag, but the 300H&H has a lot of cool factor going for it. Especially one made in 1937.

If you're going to use the rifle, you'd probably get more use out of the Roberts, unless you exclusivley hunt large bodied game or shoot at extended ranges.
