I Just bought an original 2008 Ruger Alaskan in .375 Ruger. Intended use is hunting bear and cape buffalo. Would really like an illuminated reticle for my aging eyes and dark background shooting. Looking hard at the Swarovski Z6i 1.7-10x42, $2500 price is a little hard to swallow. Is it worth the money? Any alternatives? Want to get the best rings to drop the scope as low as possible. Overall weight of the optics are not a great concern as adding weight to the package should only help my shoulder in the long run. Thanks in advance.

Trijicon Credo HX 1-6 is worth a look, as is much to my surprise, the SWFA 1-4, both 30mm.

The Leupold 1.5-5s were/are popular for stuff like that, but I don’t know what they still offer in that range, or how they perform these days.

I’d definitely look at the Trijicons. The 1-4 SWFA ain’t bad but I’ve broke two and won’t buy more of them. They aren’t in the same league as their other optics.

Trijicon on the other hand has been excellent in a bunch of different models.

For Dangerous game price would be no objective for me. I think the Swaro has a lot of competition, S&B makes a heck of a scope which I would trust more then the Swaro.

I am sure there are other brands that are well built as well.

I put one on a scope-killing Mini-14 because of the reputation for toughness. We shall see….

One on a 18” AR 5.56 and another was my Guide Gun 45-70. The 1-6’s are in a whole nother league in my opinion. To their credit they replaced them. No notes on what went wrong with them, but I use a lot of their other scopes and like them but the 1-4 and me just couldn’t hit it off.

The Mini will, as we used to say in the telephone world, “put it in or put it out”, with that whack-a-mole op-rod.

I really like it for that app, but the former PA Cyclops remains on standby.

I just ordered a Trijicon Accupoint 1-6 and QD 30mm rings from Alasaka Arms. I will update you all when I run some rounds through it.

Oh no, am I reading this correctly that a SWFA scope actually failed? Quick, somebody call the midget..

Nothing wrong with the Ruger ring system. You would just have to figure what height 30mm rings to use.
Or Warne makes a lever detachable for the Ruger

Please do. I have components for a 9.3 build - if I ever get around to it - and this is high on my list of possible scopes.

I'd go Trijicon LOOOOONNNNG before a Swaro! Especially on a DG gun. And this is coming from a guy who used to think the Z6 was the best scope on the planet. The glass is the best there is and it's super light. If that's all you care about, you'll love it, until you don't, like me. That weight savings comes an an unacceptable cost in durability. They don't reliably track, have lousy zero retention and are built with egg shells. The tube is paper thin. The slightest bump will at best disrupt zero and at worst kill the scope. I had an entire elevation turret shear off clean at the scope tube. This revealed the plastic internals of the turret assembly. Swaro obviously built that POS to look good on paper and for those that take a quick look through one in a shop. Swaro should be genuinely ashamed.

The Swarorski is a great scope choice i would use picatinny mnts,if you have barrel sights on this rifle , its another option if you did have trouble with scope ?
