While rummaging around in my 30 caliber bullet inventory, I found 2 full boxes of Hornady 30 caliber 155 grain A-Max bullets, #30312. One is an older box, and is marked twist rate 1-14. The other box is one of the current Hornady boxes, and is marked featuring AMP jackets, twist rate 1-12. I guess I'm somewhat confused because these two boxes have the same product number, yet are marked for different barrel twist rates. Does anyone know what difference there is, if any, between the 2 boxes and why they are marked this way.

I`ve had some experience with them in HP. I shot a 10 twist barrel in the 308. That was 6-8 yrs ago, I still have the empty box, same product no. as yours...marked 1-14 twist or faster. They shot very, very well, even to 1K.
Want to sell em?

Want to sell em? Paul, my 2 308's are a 1-10, and a 1-11 1/4 ROT. I figured those bullets would work, but I was somewhat curious why one box was marked 1-14 twist rate and the other 1-12. As to selling them, I'd consider trading them for some Sierra's in 168 MK's. Otherwise, I'll keep them.

Seeing that marked on the box, figgured I`d had the twist covered. Don`t know why the box is marked as such, maybe some older .30 cal. rifles had a slower twist than 14. Do not have 168`s to trade, sorry.

I do not know what the difference is, but I believe that bullet is discontinued. The only 155 gr listed is the 3039 155 gr. HP Match. I have used the 3039s for informal club shoots from 100 to 300 yards only, but they shoot well.
AMaxes were made before they started using AMP jackets. Maybe in their tests with the newer AMP jackets they updated the box information.

They fly well and are the hammer of Thor on deer.....even thru shoulders.....at least at .308 Win. velocities. I wish I had more than I do...... lol But my rifle is 10" twist ..... can't comment on 12vs14 issue.... Edited to add..... My boxes are marked 1-14....

Early .224 75gn A-max's had twist discrepancies on the box as well. The earliest had 1:9 then soon changed to 1:8.
