I mean in practice, at varmints, etc., from your centerfires, and 22's. What is the minimum number you consider sufficient to stay in shooting "trim"? I would expect it to be pretty high on this site, given the dedication to shooting many on here demonstrate.
The 280 Remington is overbore.
The 7 Rem Mag is over bore.

I brought a sailing buddy to the range. He did not own a gun and I don't think he had fired a shot since being a marine in Vietnam. Another member handed him a 375 RUM and told him to shoot at the target up at 100 yds. He put his first shot right into the center offhand.
Of course I coached him by telling him to hold on tight.

Somewhere around 5000 rounds through the .22's every year, mostly through a Ruger target auto.
About 1000+ rds through a .308 bolt gun annually, more if I'm doing much match shooting. I know fellows who shoot several times that amount through their match rifles. Typically they out-shoot me...
About 2500+ through my .45 ACP. Sometimes quite a bit through the .223 AR-15 as well.
Depends on how hard I'm training. The .22 is a great way to save money and still get plenty of trigger time. I don't shoot the hunting rifles, the .25-06, 7mm mag, .300's etc nearly as much. Some as little as 40 or 50 rounds a year.
Regards, Guy

when I was shooting High power I'd guess 2000 to 5000 per year of .223 thru the match accurized AR-15, when I was serious about smallbore, closer to 10,000. 5000 pistol.
competition shooting is really shooting, a LOT of shooting...
this board is mostly hunters and hunting rifles, a whole different sport.... I blow up a few dozen water jugs per year and put some holes in paper animals..... maybe 200 or 400 from hunting rifles per year in recent years. If I were more serious, I'd put another coupla thousand thru a bolt action sporter .22 too for practice. And dry fire at the TV too....
Everyone has a different feeling about dry firing a gun. But I would say that dry fire is MORE VALUABLE as a form of practice than live fire.... olympic air guns have a dry fire switch! and they use it! An olympic coach recommended 4 to 8 dry fire shots for every live shot fired....
including weekend rifle matches, the tuesday evening pistol league, (there are 3 big ranges in phoenix) an occasional camping trip and 5 or 10 hunting days per year, I have about 120 shooting events per year...
shoot good

I will shoot about 5 to 6k in shot gun rounds, 6 or 7k in rimfire and 2k or so in centerfire. So in the area of 13,000 or so total, and thats way down. When I was shooting lots of sporting clays I would shoot 20,000 in shot gun alone. Then I got married.............

About 2500 a year. I'd be a better rifleman if I did shoot more.

I shoot about 2500 rds a year, almost all centerfire. I can never seem to find more time for rimfire, though I try. In terms of minimum rounds to stay proficient I think frequency is more important than round count. Ten rounds every week would do one better than 100 rounds once a month.

2000-3000 I am trying to get the number up by shooting more rimfire and smallbore centerfire. I spend too much time group shooting while testing handloads and rifle tuning. I need more: Practice Practice Practice

Bill Poole said this about learing to shoot better: "Everyone has a different feeling about dry firing a gun. I agree with that. Let me explain my view on it. What you don't want to do is to practice bad shots or yanking the trigger. In my opinion its not necessary, at least for myself, to fire as many shots as some have mentioned to be able to shoot well.
So as not to fire bad shots which can put you down the list at a match or wound game put the gun down or at least start your breathing over when the aim is not going well.
Once you train your mind not to fire bad shots you will not do so or least they will be very rare.

+1 on dry firing in the den. I find that it helps with training the eye to remember sight picture. Helps develop quicker off hand accuracy, and just becoming more familiar with the trigger. And you can do it every day for a month before hunting season.

My center fire rifles have become semi-retired the last few years. My new love is shooting trap, so far this year I've shot 14,500 rounds. I just love shooting all those birds and not having to clean them.
