At the end of the day, it does work pretty well. The design just seems a little odd.

what I see is that no one has a [bleep] clue as to the actual reason for the barrel profile.

Light enough to carry a lot, thick enough to not walk too much when hot.

Greatly prefer shooting the 20" pencil A1s and sights. We have a few A2 uppers. Kinda like a poor man's LMG upper - more controllable than the pencils.
