Every year doing taxes on the computers has involved updating browsers, downloading and installing the software and enduring the updates etc before I could actually start them. Began the torment yesterday using the W10 laptop and it stuttered and slogged through the Windows updates until I got fed up and checked the App Store and found that Block has a free app with free E-filing for the iPad. Installed in a trice. Linked up the bluetooth keyboard and wham, bam, thank you ma’am they were done. Only cost was the optional storage for my return for six years, which will cut my time next year since I won’t have to enter all that info from our 1099s.

Hoping that the GOP retakes the Congress and makes the Trump tax regs permanent. Money-wise it’s pretty much a draw for us, but not having to itemize is huge.

I've been using the Turbotax free version for years. A couple years ago, they also added state taxes for free. You don't need an app. Just go to their website. They'll save past years for free and pull all the info from last year into the current year.

Everyone has to have an app. I did mine on my iPad the last 3 years, called the internet. Amazing how what you do with Win10 on the net can also be done on a iPad on the net. Easy easy and no App involved.

Hey Rocky, fired up my Win10 laptop last week to charge the battery, let it go through its 30-45 min boot and updates then I used it for a couple hours running a bore scope. Win10 has a better camera program than 7 otherwise it wouldn’t have got fired up at all.

Will these things like Turbo Tax work if you have a fairly complicated return? My brokerage house 1099 is like 5 pages, like business income, depreciation schedules, dividends, tax exempt bonds??? What I spend on a CPA each year would purchase a very nice rifle. (I'm not well off, I just resent sending money to these fools, so take every deduction I possibly can without an audit)

Well this is a fine pickle we're in, should'a listened to Joe McCarthy and George Orwell I guess.

I doubt the free programs will handle anything real complicated, but they have regular software that will do just about anything, and walk you through the process with “interviews”. Thankfully, mine are now simple and I can skip all that.

Since I filed through Block, I should get updates on the status of my return. I say should, but we’ll see. Saves me from having to go to the gummint sites myself. I did get confirmation that my returns were accepted; the fed in minutes, the state in a couple of hours.

Paying taxes for the Liberal Socialist Democrats welfare as a way of life types always gives me a warm feeling inside....
And they have the same right to vote.
I'm glad this equality exist in our system......
It's only fair.....
Their ability to vote gives it a even more " special" feeling for me..

Do they have versions for the Intel-powered Minis? That would make a good testbed.

I'm Glad I've Always Used A CPA !
I've used the same CPA since the late 1980s, me being a working guy and now a retiree, and never owned a business. With 365 days per year
it cost under 96 cents daily, about 75% higher than when I began to use this guy. Eight or nine years ago the IRS sent a nasty letter to me. They
claimed that I'd received tens of thousand of dollars in income a couple of years prior, that was not entered on my return. The letter claimed that
I owed interest and penalty money to them! I forwarded the letter to the CPA. He sent proof to the IRS that I did not owe any interest nor penalty
payment to the IRS. The IRS wrote back to me stating the matter had been updated in their files and that all was well, no payment due from me.
NO CHARGE from the CPA to me, for the letter that he sent to the IRS after going through the files that he had on me, and compiling the evidence.
So the CPA has also been an insurance policy, "so to speak", for such events. I guess when I started as a customer the bill was $200 to have my
my tax return prepared. Over the course of about 35 years it's risen, and now I send $350 to him each tax season. ( hence the sub 96 cents per
day calculation) I AM HAPPY TO PAY IT !!!!!

The free online version won't. Just buy their package, either online to download or a CD. They're readily available at places like Costco or Amazon. You'll have to read up on which version you need for your situation.

For the record: I'm radically opposed to a tax system that requires the taxpayers to pay hundreds of dollars for software or an accountant to figure out what you owe. That's way too complicated. It needs to be greatly simplified.

I spend 6 to 8 hours collecting all of the papers and details into a couple spreadsheets and a large zip lock bag. 45 minutes with the Tax Accountant and a check for $125... Done...

Have had a tax guy prepare my taxes every year for the 43 years that we have been married. Have done my own in parallel three times over the years as a "check". Each time the tax man paid for himself multiple times over. No brainer...
