Why in the world would you want to do that? Magazines, it is a magazine by definition not a clip btw, are just something to lose and as a rule have more feeding issues.

I'll add a little data point to this discussion regarding weight. Both rifles below have Talley lightweight rings and Tract Toric 2-10X42 scopes.

Montana in .223:

Hunter Pro in .308. IIRC, you can save an ounce of weight by swapping out the brake with the thread protector:

You’d be money well ahead just sticking with the hunter stock.

I think MPI makes the stock you want but I don't know if it's the most cost effective way to go.

Sock, the .223 barrel will be a few ounces heavier than the .308 barrel due to more steel remaining in the .223. I think it is about 4 ounces give or take, as my .338 Fed is 5 ounces lighter than my .223...both Montanas.

Does your Hunter stock have the gel removed, as that is around a half a pound if I remember right.

Kurt, the Hunter Pro stock is all factory. I don't find the weight objectionable, so I'll give it some trigger and pack time before I decide whether to mess with the gel.

I bought a classic a while back and sold the walnut and bottom metal. I bought one the Kimber Improved Prototype Montana stocks that MCMXI was selling here. He worked at Kimber and is a wealth of info. He was so correct about these prototypes being superior to the Costa Rican made production Montana stocks. Stiffer, better feel at about the same weight.

I would look for one of these or get a custom stock ssmentioned versus spending the time and money on a Montana stock. If you want a detachable magazine as others have said, bed it properly and paint it.

Would love to hear how this went! I bought a hunter 2 years ago brand new for $500 and love it. Want to potentially do this swap myself and wanted to see how it went for you!

I sanded and painted my hunter stock and it looks good but I want something firmer
