You guys are getting me all stirred up. A .260 has been on my "next rifle list" since a friend took one to Africa and returned raving about its knock-down power on large plains game. My dilemma? I like lever-actions and single-shots. An Encore is a possibility but I don't think they make a stainless barrel in a .260. I wish more manufacturers would produce a .265 but they don't.

Get a Ruger 1A and have it re-bored or re-barreled!

I have a model 7 in 260 and love it. I put it in a Bansner stock and topped it with a Leupold 2.5x8. I took the factory barrel off and put a 22 in mountian rifle barrel on. oh by the way, it will shoot as well

why a hunter would not want to purchase a 7mm-08 or 308 as either might have a wider range of applications and more factory available ammunition? Then could recoil really be that different between a 140 grain bullet out of a 260, a 140 out of a 7mm-08, or a 150 out of a 308? cause i handload and i like the 6.5...........must be my nordic heritage basically i dont like the 243 and if im serious after elk ive got a 338-06. wanted a light weight deer/antelope/yote rifle.......a rifle i was going to pack alot and shoot lil. always had a thing for 6.5's so when i had the oppertunity to get a Kimber 84M in 260 i jumped on it. that and it gave me a back up rifle for the wife that she could use without fear of recoil(have had a bad habit of buying rifles she has NO interest in ever pulling the trigger on)....the wife wanted a light rifle, that doesnt kick for everything from yotes to elk so she went with a 7-08

I would have "ordered" a T/C custom stianless 260 barrel but they only offer it in blue. EABCO offers a "stainless" 260 barrel for the Encore rifle but only in the 1/8 twist to my knowledge. At least EABCO has a barrel for you. doc

Hey Barney, I had that gun! The blue 308 model 7 with 18 inch barrel, loud and kicked the snot out of you with 180's off the bench yet a very handy deer gun..your reasoning behind the .260 is clear to me now. I have found that the straight stock on a Kimber is a ton easier on you for some reason, maybe as they put a good recoil pad on them. Someone may call BS on me for this but to my shoulder off the bench my 300WSM Kimber seems to kick less than a .270 with a MonteCarlo stock.

For years my rifle of choice was a .270 Win that was used around the world. For the past 3 years I have used a Rem 700 Mtn Rifle almost exclusivly for whitetail. It is easy to carry, fast to mount, has less recoil, and is accurate. It's as close to perfect as I can imagine.
Ballistics are almost identical to the 6.5x55 that Eupoeans use for all hunting including red deer and moose. For the larger critters the 140 gr bullet has the SD to ensure effectiveness.
Highly recommend the .260!

I only have one .260 in Model SS Syn 20", but I notice the same thing as you. "The short barrels, 18.5" and 20", make the factory 7s unbalanced to the rear, IOW, butt-heavy."
But it shoots too well and is so light to carry. Someday I might rebarrel, but I would probably just get another .260.
In my opinion, the perfect TX deer caliber.

that is the reason I pulled the 20 factory barrel and replaced it with a 22" factory barrel. The balance was far better. When I put it in the Bansner stock, it's just about perfect....

Handling the M7 SS with that boat-anchor injection molded stock, I was thinking that a Hunter's Edge would take off about 14-15oz and improve the balance considerably. The short forend would work well with the 20" tube. You'd be in the same weight class as a Montana and price would be close as well. Pick your poison......
Now with even more aplomb

Just an FYI, those plastic stocks are smelly and noisy. Smell one- smells like plastic. Can't be good. Scrape or tap one with your finger- very noisy!
I much prefer the laminate stock. It's heavier, but it's quiet and much more solid-feeling.
I would have to also say that if it were me, I'd go 7mm-08 over .260, but that's probably blasphemy for this thread!

-jeff Yeah, this one is all about .260 love. Take the 7mm talk to the "cult of 7-08" thread/lovefest.

22-23" would be less muzzle blast. Never had a 18.5 inch barrel, but it has to be a considerable muzzle blast.

Remington 700 .260 Rem LMSS in Ti stock, with Leuppie 6x36. Most recent target - H414 pushing 129 Hornady Spire Points. Yes, there are five bullet holes within the circle. 0.810" I bought a .260 just because I wanted to. There are 50 cartridges that will work equally well to kill a deer, and probably 25 within the same general performance niche -- and probably half a dozen of those live in my gun safes. But...I don't care. YMMV . DN

Jeff, it can`t smell any worse than you or I after we`ve been spiked out for a week. I bought a Ti 260, when they first came out. It shot under an inch, but I needed the action for another project. I skelitonized a 700 SA, and used the 260 bbl. and the Ti stock. Built it for my grandaughter, but had to test it first. Put a Lupy 6x42 on it, and killed three whitetail (120 BT`s), and a big Ak blackie (140 Part). Love the way things fall in their tracks, with the BT`s. Grandaughter will be ten in Dec. Have to give it up soon. sighhh

nice rifles, makes me a bit jealous looking at them. How is the .260 relative to the .243 as tough on barrel metal?

Here is a pic of my 15 year old's M7,260, Mcmillan, Timney, yeah, he loves it rifle. It is loud with that 20 inch barrel. Accuracy a little tempermental. Might be getting a 22" Pac-Nor put on over the winter.
