Ladies and gentleman, I am sure this has been addressed throughout many posts but I thought I would ask considering the very wise folks that inhabit this forum. By the way, I recently posted asking for some help regarding a new scope purchase for a 270...went with a second elite 4200, solid scope it seems. So, first and foremost thanks to any and all replies!!!

I am just curious what your preferences are for a 270 Win for mule deer. I highly doubt I would take a 400 yard shot but I suppose it is possible. I don't suspect I will want to purchase a $40 box of ammo but would consider if the performance justifies such. This is just a very general question. I guess 130 grain is sufficient or is 150 grain better? I also know that different bullets may group better out of a particular gun, etc. Again, just kind of a general question. Anyhow, any help is certainly appreciated. Thanks!!!

For deer hunting most any 130-140 grain factory load would be fine. Whatever shoots well in your rifle. No real need for the premium stuff, though nothing wrong with them if you feel the need. Don't have any recomendations since my 270 barrels as one guy said "have never been polluted with factory ammo".

+ 1 on Federal Premium 150 grain Nosler Partitions. My Remington 700 XCR loves them!

I have a Winchester Model 70 chambered in 270 and I shoot Hornady Light Magnum 130 grain Interbonds. Very accurate and consistant and will lay them out.

I use (and vote for) 140 TSX. I believe you can get this in factory form. PMC or Federal ??

In three different .270 rifles my family have had 100% reliable performance (luck) with Hornadys 140 grain bullet. Never recovered one for all were pass throughs, and all have been one-shot kills. They are accurate too.

The 130 Partition in .270 Win is as effective as anything that passed thru a deer chest. Period. JMHO

I lean toward 140grn pills in the .270W. Wished the Accubond had been around when I shot the .270, but the 140 Ballistic Tip was a winner on deer and pronghorns. I'd bump up to 150-Partitions for elk and similar large stuff.

Also I have no desire to change my successes with Nosler.

I got hooked on 140s with my first box of Remington Extended range 140-gr BTSPs in a FAST load. Super accurate, so Remington discontinued them, of course. Good thing Wally World closed them out at $6.00 a box so I could stock up.

In handloads a great choice, proven over many years on big game from pronghorn to moose, and gawd knows how many deer, is the 130 Nosler Partition. It's available in Federal factory. If you handload, it works.Paper ballistics aside, I've used it on deer and antelope to about 400 yards. It kills fine.

But in other factory ammo today, the first one I'd reach for is the Federal Fusion 130 270. I've shot a bunch in 30/06,270 and 7 mag, and would not hesitate to use it on any deer hunt anywhere.Price is very reasonable, too.

Bullet construction means a lot more than whether the bullet weighs 130,140 or 150 grs. in a 270.

The 280 Remington is overbore.

The 7 Rem Mag is over bore.

Fantastic info...thanks for the replies. It sounds as if you won't go astray with the accubonds and/or partitions. Just see which one shoots best and go from there...thanks again!!

I've never had a 130gr Core-Lokt let me down for deer. It doesn't take a premium round to anchor a deer.

Asking what factory loads shoot better is even riskier than asking what's a good handload. Just pick out a box or three and shoot. Go with the one that consistently shoots a 2-inch or better group in your gun.

You're deer hunting. Any 270 bullet will work well. I use the 130 partition for most everything, deer, antelope, elk and whatever, but the 130 core-lokt/fusion/powerpoint will all work fine. Find one that shoots well and sharpen your knives.

+1 For an inexpensive factory round these have worked well for me also. Accurate and effective!

I load 140gr Accubonds to 2936fps (chronied average) in my 22" bbl. M70 Fwt .270 Win. This M70 has been my go-to deer rifle and has a marvelous string of one-shot kills to it's credit. With the 140gr Accubonds, I've taken mature bucks from 45 yards to over 400 yards. I've only recovered one Accubond as the rest have been pass throughs. A couple weeks ago, I located a NIB M70 Classic Fwt in .270 WSM and finally got it home. Can't wait to see how the new .270 WSM will do on our large northern whitetails & muleys next month.
