Starting to work up loads for my Son's .308 to use on his elk hunt in New Mexico this year. Will be using 155 gr Scenar-L, Rem brass, 210M/CCI BR2.

Did alot of research and the consensus for powder seems to be Varget anywhere from 44 gr to 46 or 47 gr. I have come across some additional loads using CFE223. Also looked at burn rate charts to compare Vihtavouri powders using 155 gr Scenars-L for the .308 and see that Big Game, Hunter, Stabal 6.5 and maybe Tac, which I have a decent supply can possibly be used. H4350 and H4831SC looks like they might work as well I just don't have much of either.

Those of you that have more knowledge and experience than I, would you just stay with Varget or would you try/have tried any of the other powders I've listed? Thanks for your help.

I love TAC in my 308 with 150- and 165-grain bullets. Best results come with near-max loads and magnum primers.

I'd say no on 4350 and 4831, they're too slow.

With 155s in a 308 you could use IMR 3031 IMR 4895, IMR 4064, IMR 4166, Benchmark, 8208XBR, H4895, Varget, BLC2, W748, CFE 223, N140, N135, Norma 202, Norma 203b, RL15, TAC and others from Accurate and Shooter's World.

If you have Varget and TAC then roll with those. Skip the Big Game, Hunter and Stabal.

Good advice. Too bad he didn't have any RL15 or AR Comp to try..

After trying several powders over the years, I settled on Varget for the last ten or twelve years with no plans to try anything else.

I'm not a huge fan of Varget when it comes to measuring it, but it really gives good performance in a 308. So does TAC, 748, and IMR4064.

When all else fails go to Win 748 in the Win 308,

Using 155 Scenar bullets, my best loads are between 48 to 49.5 grains of CFE223 with BR-2 or Fed 210M. Seems very temperature stable as well. VARGET using the same bullet and primers, the best loads between 45 to 46.5 grains. Of course these are in MY rifle.

WW748 is too temperature sensitive for around these parts.

I prefer classic.

As you know Every rifle is an individual and will prefer some powders over others, but since you have a good supply of TAC I would start there, the CFE223 also would be suitable for your purpose but id stay away from the slower burners like 4350 and Big Game. My guess is you will be fine with your TAC and CFE223 but if you want to try something different ( if you can find it) I have had excellent results with Varget and RL-15 along with the old stand by IMR4064....Good luck and have fun 👍....Hb
