Some new guns chambered in 38-55 can fire 375win ammo safely. Does anyone know if the h&r buffalo classic is one of them?

Hi Spencer_SS.....
I have one of those H&R Target rifles in 38-55....Most 38-55's have groove dia. running around .377 to .379+...My H&R groove is .381+....The .375 Win ammo is bullet dia. should be .375...The H&R has the strength to handle .375 Win ammo but most likely it won't shoot for beans because of the differance in groove dia....
The main problem with my rifle is that the chamber will only except .379 dia. cast bullets even with neck turned brass...I have read that some of these rifles have smaller groove dia. and shoot cast fine and alot of them like mine don't shoot cast worth a hoot frown ...One of these days I'll order a reamer to enlarge the chamber..
I can not recommend the H&R in 38-55...

+1 on Nrut's post.
This rifle in this caliber is most difficult to work with. My best group with a .379 diameter 245gr bullet is 3.5 inches. This was with factory sights.

You will be lucky to hit the paper with a .375 diameter bullet.

Funny that the same rifle is offered in two variants -- the Target model in 38-55 that won't shoot, and the Buffalo Classic in 45-70 that is a real drill. Mine is amazing and so far I have not found a bullet it will not shoot well, from cast 405 grainers to Barnes original to 350 Hornady RN.

shootist...You have that right!...I have a friend that has a Buffalo Classic ....He shoots a RCBS 405 cast boolit with a case full of H4350 and has shot 2 black bear, 2 mule deer, and one moose with it...Very accurate rifle....Last winter he made a falling block rifle, of his own design with out the aid of a lathe or milling machine and is using it for this years hunting...I keep telling him he does'nt need his BC now but he still won't sell it to me... smirk

I think I gave $400 for the Buffalo Classic, and it was money WELL spent. Looks pretty good too.
