Shot a real nice bird on Saturday Morning. Came in silent and stopped at the edge of my field. I used a single hen decoy put out about 40 yards from my blind. Shot was 30 steps using a Remington Versamax 12 with Leupold scope 1x4. Ammo was Winchester longbeard 3.5 inch #4's with Heavishot choke. 24 lbs - 11 inch beard Sunday late afternoon I hunted a different blind and didn't hear or see anything. Decided to get closer to the edge of a clover field and five minutes later three birds came in. Shot was only 20 steps with the same Versamax. This bird was 23 1/2 lbs and 7 inch beard. This is my first year turkey hunting with my Versamax / Leupold combo. The Winchester longbeards really pattern well out of this gun.

Nice work. ๐ excuse my ignorance, what strain you guys got in Kentucky? Eastern?
Ping pong balls for the win. Once you've wrestled everything else in life is easy. Dan Gable I keep my circle small, Iโd rather have 4 quarters than 100 pennies.

Yeppers, that's an Eastern. Look at the tips of the tail feathers. Eastern tail feather tips are dark. Rio tail feathers are creamy. Merriam tail feathers are almost white. Good deal. Turkeys have not been easy to find in my part of Kentucky.

Judman, here's a pretty good photo. Hope the link works. https://images.app.goo.gl/SgNH62zj8dYZsZUg8Left to right: 1) Eastern 2) Merriam's 3) Rio Grande 4) IDK? (Osceola?) note the distinct differences in the tail feather tips. Best I can tell, the Osceola tail feather tips are kind of a blend of the Eastern and the Rio. The biggest difference is that the Osceola is smaller and the normal striping of the wing feathers is absent.

Ok got it. ๐
We got 3 species here in Washington, eastern, which is on the west side where I live, but are pretty rare, Merriams over NE wa, and south central, and rio in SE wa. Need to start checking it out more, Iโm hooked. ๐๐ป

Still love deer hunting, but it can't hold a candle to a turkey coming in! ๐

CONGRATS! Martin strummer, tell us about the Osceola. What about 'em? Never seen one that I'm aware of. Your best bet is look them up online. All I've ever killed were Rio's. ๐

Had one for dinner tonight. Soaked strips in seasoning and milk for 5 hours. Then added some KY Seasoned Flour and fried them. Only found 2 pellets when cleaning the strips. Green circle in the white meat was a dead giveaway. Good Stuff.....

Congratulations on a couple nice birds. This has been my worst season in about 20 years. No luck so far.
Why do I have to press 1, for English?
