t-budding is way, way, WAY easier, quicker and has a higher success rate.

make a cross shaped incision in the bark of the host branch. Peel the edge of the bark loose from the branch a little. Shave a bud from the donor branch and slip it into the incisionm, so the "flaps" of the cross are over the top of the bud. Once the bud is past the center of the cross, move it back up so the bud is covered by bark of the host branch. Tie the incision closed with a cut rubber band, leaving the bud sticking out.

My brother could do between 250 and 300 of these an hour, and one "ty-er" (me) would keep up with two budders. Heck of a way to spend college Spring Break every year....

I've never done it, but my grandfather had a large orchard, and he'd grafted three kinds of apples on one tree.

I have tried my hand at grafting pecans, with no luck. Couple of different methods, off of the internet. I have lots of volunteer root stock, but also have had no luck with buying young bare root trees and setting them out. They will put on leaves for a while and then die. In all fairness, I did not like the looks of the roots when I set them out. miles

Tried grafting some apple scions myself this spring. Should know in another month or so if it was successful. These two youtube videos helped me get started. BTW, the grafting knife is very sharp, as my daughter/grafting partner found out!

My dad has grafted 8 pecans that all took. A friend of his is big into grafting pecans. Dad started with wild seedlings from the conservation department. About 2 years after planting they grafted. Trees are now about 8 years old. You can see the transition in the bark from wild strain to domestic type.
