I didn’t know they ever built this rifle with the J lock on it. Interesting. Thats the way it came when it was bought at least ten years back, so I have no explanation.

I’ve got the firing pin assembly and shroud to eliminate the j lock. Easy to change. Hasbeen
hasbeen (Better a has been than a never was!)

Price drop to $1150, since there is the question of originality.

Not knocking your rifle, it is a nice shooter grade 700. You might want to pull the bolt and see if last 4 digits of serial number are whats on the bolt. If so hasbeen is right, you can fix that. Another thing i noticed is the stock where black pin is. None of my Varmint Specials have that. Only a brass pin.

24 or 26" barrel?
If 26" I am betting it was a VLS that somebody stuck in an old BDL Varmint Special stock.
The BDL Varmint Special was gone several years before J locks were put on guns.
Stick a pic of the crown on here. That will tell the era as well.

Ok, to answer a couple of the questions..
1. It has a 24" barrel.
2. The bolt number DOES match the last four of the serial number.
3. The muzzle crown is flat with a very slight concave towards the center (no step or sharp recess). I can get a picture of it later if need be.
Any ideas? I'll be honest, you guys have me curious now.

If I'm reading the date code on the side of the barrel (it says "KO" and then P next to it), she was put out in May, 1994.

Barrel length is correct and crown sounds right for a BDL VS.
Makes me wonder if someone swapped the shroud out for the J lock for some reason. J locks didn't come out for a few more years after your date code.

Hmmmm. Interesting. All are correct in that the varmint specials never had j locks. I’m not home but I’m pretty sure all of mine also have action screw heads too… not Allen heads but I’m not home to check. I’m looking for a 243 VS….
