Somebody on Facebook said to prove to him that the Winchester 94 wasn't one of the best survival guns.

I said.. "Easy. What if you're attacked by a whale? That 94's no good. Need a Savage." grin

Next time I'm attacked by a whale, I'll remember to grab the trusty old 303 😁

Neat advertisement. I do enjoy such things, so please keep them coming. I watch old video's and read old diary's as well. Sorry to say this but I have read of 2 successful whale hunts using a 94 Winchester and the 30/30 round. These types of situations are the reason I carry a handful of full metal jacket ammo for every caliber I have. Never know when such an event will happen. Years ago, an elephant got loose from a traveling circus near Meeker, Colorado and after several days of trying to recapture it the owner threw up his hands and walked away. Two cowboys using 270 Winchesters got to hunt and shoot an elephant at Rio Blanco, CO.

Let's be clear. They didn't hunt it.

They shot it

According to one of the cowboys son's they mounted horse and followed a very easy to follow track for 2 days before they found it in a draw surrounded by mule deer. However I heard the story years after it happened and I knew one of the cowboys as an old man, and there is a good chance a fair amount of corn liquor was involved.

Interesting side note, I once hunted a Norwegian reindeer in Basalt, Colorado. Disney was filming a movie near Aspen and flew in a small herd of reindeer for the movie. One got out of its cage as they were unloading it at the Aspen airport. After a few hours of chasing it around Aspen, the producer said to get back to filming. This was when the Colorado Division of Wildlife informed the producer that he had to catch said reindeer or face a fine for introducing a foreign species into the state. That was when the calls went out to shoot on sight. A lot of us went hunting. A few saw it on private property where they could not shoot it. I chased it for 2 days before work caught up me. It was last seen several months later near Ruedi reservoir.

You ever hunt bigfoot or know any old cowboys that did?

Well, finally we know what is too big to hunt with a 22HP!

I have often said that the Savage 99 is the best Eastern whale rifle ever made.

That's funny and thanks for posting! However I have to say the heck with the Winchester 94, seems as though the 303 Savage set a mighty high bar with whales, let alone the 250 with tigers. And what more could any rationale man ever want?! grin

This reminds me of the story my buddy from Duluth tells about hunting elephant as a kid back in grade school. Back in the '50's Bertha the elephant got loose from the West Duluth zoo and headed out into the woods. Bob and his buddies knew where it was and went after it with their Red Riders. How often does a kid get a chance to hunt an elephant? Guess they were pretty slow telling anyone where it was.

if the sailors on the whaleship "Essex" (the ship destroyed by the real Moby Dick) had just had a '95 or a '99, they would have been saved rowing 3000 miles and having to eat some of their buddies! Savage to the rescue! USCG should require one on every ocean-going vessel, right along with PFDs!

First post and I do not want to upset the flow, but is this an appropriate thread to ask for opinions on a 1899/99 I purchased on Thursday?
