Just got done talking to my buddy in Mexico.
Looking very much like an Ocellated hunt is on my 2024 horizon.
I never really even considered doing this one. Then I introduced my wife's cousin to turkey hunting. He's a world traveler and never turns down a chance to race a race or climb a mountain. So, we're lining up Campeche 2024. Oughta be interesting.

Funny how biologically its a Pea fowl then when there is money to be made it magically becomes a turkey.
I bet ol'Glock head could even call one.

Actually, the Ocellated (Meleagris ocellata) IS a turkey in the same family as the five subspecies of our American wild turkey (Meleagris gallopavo). Peafowl are from the Pavo family. The Indian peacock.........the one all of us recognize........being Pavo cristatus.
The hunt ends up being fairly similar to what we do up here. But the calling is done with an electronic caller.........kinda like a FoxPro, I guess. Been trying to find a good sound file of an Ocellated hen. Curious as to whether their sounds could be imitated by something a guy could devise at home ??

They need those spurs for all the snakes down there! Lol! I specifically asked my buddy if I'd need my snake boots for this hunt (because they take up a lot of room in a bag) and he said "No. Hikers are all you need".

Look it up yOderboy Chagus is pretty prevalent down there....it's spread by a kissing beetle.
Like I said until after outfitters started selling hunts at the NWTF Convention the Ocelated was not considered a part of the 5 sub species of wild turkey by most all biologists. Then all the sudden it is a cousin.
Ironic that a phOny like you would want to kill a phOny turkey....

Well........... I don't have any plans at this time to be kissing any beetles while I'm down there. Just hunting.
Ocellateds still AREN'T considered to be part of the 5 sub-species. Like I posted above........... Gallopavo ocellata is a distinct and separate species altogether. But, to look at one, there's WAY too much similarity to deny a cousin relationship. I don't register birds with the NWTF, anyways. So it really doesn't matter. They aren't making any money off of me.
Don't be a hater, Luther. I'm pretty sure I'm not the first person to go hunt them. There's a whole lotta ph0nies that have gone before me.

...Family>Genus>Species>Sub-Species.
The Ocelleated and the other north American turkeys are all the same Genus. They are a different Species. And the North American turkeys are different subspecies. The Genus is what makes them all true turkeys. Typically, animals in the same Genus can mix and reproduce, but classifications higher than the Genus cannot. In other words, an ocelleated and eastern turkey could reproduce and create a hybrid since they are the same Genus. However, a turkey and a pheasant, both in the samer Family, the next classification above Genus, cannot.
The Occellated is a true turkey, always has been and always will be.

LOL !!!! My dumb.
Mrs. DellAntonio, my high school biology teacher would be SO disappointed in me. Genus. Not family. Family is Phasianidae.

This is precisely why anyone who thinks they might have a civil discussion with Luther is somewhere between a dumbass and dead wrong. I, and everyone else have been absolutely tolerant.....bordering on cordial with Luther in this thread and the above quote is the best he can do. Ya try.................... Ya fail. I guess it's just time to push the "adult conversation" button on you again, Luther and LEAVE it pushed. Let you spout your verbal vomit in a vacuum.
