I'd have to think plugged barrel or double charge on powder.

I'll see if I can find the pic? My neighbors son, in WV, had a Savage 110 in 270 turn the barrel into a banana peel. They called Savage and Savage ask what ammo. They said Hornady factory. Savage said that Hornady had a bad batch of ammo, the machine skipped a shot of powder now and then. They said call Hornady and they would replace the rifle. But, they though it looked so cool as a wall hanger they just kept it.

That has to be a result of a barrel obstruction.

You can't put enough powder in a short case to do that kind of damage.

Randy, are you referring to the picture or Jeremy turning his 110 into a peeled banana? They think Jeremy's rifle was a squib load. If it split the barrel half way down, would the obstruction be closer to the muzzle?

As a general rule a "squib" load* causes destruction behind where the bullet is stuck in the barrel, wherever that point may be. A plugged muzzle will "banana peel" back from the muzzle, how far back being dependent on the dimensions and metallurgy of of the steel in the barrel and the pressure that the obstruction is stopping.

*Seemingly overnight, once upon a time long ago, the term "squib" entered shooter's vocabularies to describe a bullet stuck in a barrel. How that came about is beyond me, probably just another instance of average American's disregard for definitions/pronunciation/spelling/grammar/etc. In fact, there was a Mr. Squibb who designed bullet moulds to cast bullets intended for low velocity close range target practice, plinking, pest control, etc. Ammunition loaded with his bullets was called "squibb loads". Evidently someone stuck a bullet in a barrel when employing squibb loads and blamed it on the load and not the fact he probably did a dumbass thing like creating a super light load that couldn't push the bullet out the end of the barrel, and it caught on. Poor Mr. Squibb's name was forever maligned.

I am referring to the original picture of the 99.
