I'm lucky, I'm only short one wisdom tooth.

I thought it was cool when my grandparents had their teeth in a glass of water overnight. laugh

You kind folks?

When I was growing up in the 1950's, almost everyone I knew that was age 40 or over had a set of false teeth.

Now, with the advent of modern dentistry, very seldom see anyone like that.

81 and still have all mine except wisdoms.

Good thing people like you don't are not the norm for my profession. No other avenue of healthcare emphasizes prevention more than dentistry.

"Each one is a money maker"? Everything you just cited as "revenue" is a direct result of neglect. "Clean it, fill it, root canal, crown" are all treatments designed to correct what somebody neglected. No dentist ever snuck into your bedroom while you were sleeping and cracked your tooth or tied you down and prevented you from your daily oral hygiene care. All on you, baby! All on you.

I'm still sporting the original set that I was given at birth, minus my wisdom teeth. I have a couple of caps but they sit on the original bases.

I've never had a cavity. It's so easy, just brush twice a day and use Listerine...every single day. I was probably lucky with the tooth genetics as well.

Flouride in the water helps. My grown daughter and son have not had a cavity between the two of them.

Sorry I hurt your feelings. Just had a temp crown put on Tuesday. Wife and I both just spent a small fortune replacing gold crowns we had put in 20 years ago. We told at the time we should not have any more trouble with those teeth. Her problems came from acid reflux ruining her teeth. Hasbeen

Only had 2 wisdom tooths.
They gone.

Oldest daughter had her 4 yanked last Toothsday.
What a show coming off the seditative.
Have seen videos of it, thought they were BS. Not now.
She thought they cut her tongue off. "Now I can't eat sthloop".

Then I told her they pulled wisdom teeth.
"Now I'm not gonna be smart, I don't want to be stupid?"

Leaving town, by now I knew just how bad she was.
I pointed out a guy with a prosthetic leg.
"Look at that guys leg!"

"Oh no! The doctor took his leg too? Like my tongue! I hate the
doctor! That poor guy...."

Youngest doesn't have any wisdom teeth. Lucky.

Otherwise have every thing that didn't need pulled to get them
moved into position. Only 24 if I count right.
No gaps, and all the tops and bottoms match to the back of
My mouth. Orthodontist said I didn't have enough mouth for
all those teeth.

No hurt feelings. Whether in jest or not, yours was a very cynical swipe at my profession. Just setting the record straight in defense of my colleagues. We’re cool.
👍

I’m sure like any profession, there is winners and losers.

I do recall an article I read maybe 30 years ago on the dental profession. A subject was examined by a board of dentists that all came to an agreed conclusion on the subjects dental condition and work needed, as well as an average cost to complete.

The subject then visited a bunch of dentists across the US and the results were all over the place. I don’t recall the breakdown, but more than a few were wildly outside what the board considered reasonable.

Went to the same one from grade school untill about 2 years ago.
40 years?
Hated going to the dentist, forever.

Went through a tough spell, crappy job, no insurances...
Needed 3 root canals and an abscess ground out of my jaw.
Or, pull my front teefths.

Couldn't begin to afford the oral surgeon costs, Frank didn't want
to pull my teeth. He knew I wasn't in a position to decently replace them.

His solution was to do it in house.
3 hours in a chair. Awake.

He ran the numbers, $1200 in 1998.
$1300 if I paid half up front and the rest over 6 months.
Realized at scheduling he hadn't figured the fillings in.
"It'll be ok, just keep those numbers"
Still have those teeth.

Fast forward a few years.
Good job, dental insurance. (Company was self unsured we didn't know it!)
Company got into $$ trouble and was very slow paying our bills.
Doctors and hospitals were coming after the employees, we had payed
our part and the payroll deduction. But you sign that paper of responsibility!

I was in our HR lady's office dealing with yet another threatening letter,
she ask if Frank was my dentist. Then told me how he had called in,
pretty aggravated about the money they owed him. She explained how,
They were behind and paying the bills in the order they accumulated, as fast
as possible. After that, he would call and check, nicely.

And he never, not once, bothered any of the patients for the money the
insurance owed. She had great respect for him.

I miss Frank. The last few years I actually enjoyed going in to see him.
The whole family were HIS patients.

The man called me one evening right before he retired.
He was just personally contacting a number of patients he wanted to
say goodbye to. And my folks, myself and siblings, and our kids were
like family to him. Tears were actually shed.

He retired to Vegas. Hope he loves it there, I hear he actually deals
blackjack part time.

And now, I hate going to the dentist.

At 60 I have all of my teeth including all four wisdom teeth. I brush once a day in the AM and do not floss. I have not had a filling since I was 20. Knock on wood I have pretty hearty teeth. My wife doesn't.

Ed, wife and i are the same.
She is very diligent about oral hygiene, and struggles with cavities.
I'm not, used to chew, no problems.

Probably due to my parents getting us to the dentist for good care as kids.
Her parents think dentists are for pulling teeth.

Or, genetics.

Teeth vary a bit, just like folks. A mouth is about like most possessions, a bit of preventive maintenance and timely repair goes a LONG way toward dental longevity (and cost savings).

The longer and greater the neglect the higher the cost.

I suspect most people have very little idea how much the health of the average American mouth has improved in a life time.
