I have a short barreled Ruger SP101 .357. If I carry it, which isn't often, I usually have it loaded with Remington 125gr SJHPs. Quite a blast and flash. Some .38 Special loads, like the Remington 125 gr SJHP +P load are still pretty snappy in it. I've also shot .38 Spl 158 gr LSWCHP +P, the old "FBI load." They've got next to no muzzle flash and recoil is very manageable. Quite gentle, actually. I just picked up 3 20 round boxes of that load in Remington HTP.

Just curious if anyone still carries a .38 Spl and, if so, what load are you carrying?

For trail running I carry a SW360 usually stoked with 38spl+p. gold dot, short barrel rounds. Sometimes I'll load up 135gr 357 gold dot short barrels. The velocity between the two isn't much, so there's minimal gain with the 357's except for a lot more recoil and noise.

I carry a 637 while bowhunting. Not sure it would do a lot of good if a bear or wolf decided I would be a good dinner but makes a lot of noise and a nice fireball. If I hunted where grizzlies were around I'd pack something bigger.

Nyclad. Does Federal still make those? I used to shoot them in 9mm. They were good rounds.

Many years ago, I remember seeing a video of someone being arrested in some liberal northeast state by a cop who saw the person's gun and inpsected it and then claimed the ammo was "teflon coated cop killer" bullets. I remember thinking, "those are Nyclads, you dolt."

I occasionally carry a Colt Magnum Carry in 357 magnum. I load it with Remington 125gr Golden Sabre ammo, this is a medium velocity load, 1220 fps from a 4" barrel and around 1100 fps from the 2" barrel of the Magnum Carry. Another good load would be the Speer Gold Dot Short Barrel load which is a 135gr bullet at 990 fps. Both of these loads are very controllable from a steel frame snub nose revolver.

A Ruger LCR in 357 is what a carry about 90% of the time in the summer. I keep it loaded with hot 38 special reloads.

Yes, depending on the situation. It's easier to slip into my sweat pants when I go for a walk. It's a pre-lock 442 loaded with Speer Gold Dot 124 Gr.

It also goes in the console on trips with a spare speedloader strip for the same reason as above.

ETA: An ooooooold Milt Sparks Summer Special with the single loop is what I use on trips for appendix carry when it's not in the console.

I have a S&W 432-PD, .32 H&R Magnum, snub nose Revolver that I sometimes carry.
It turned out to be a very rare revolver.

Also A Ruger LCR X, 38 Spl +P with a 3" bbl. Both just in pocket carry.

Yes.
I always have my S&W 640 with me in a travel bag. Most of the time I carry a Taurus 85 or a S&W 36 (no dash).
I like Rem. Gold Saber's in all 3. Heck, I carry a Ruger LC9 a lot with Gold Saber's. I like that load.

I have plenty of times. I carried an old Colt Detective Special for years. For years I carried J-frame S&W .38 Special revolvers, and for years I carried a Model 13 S&W (FBI configuration, i.e., three inch bull barrel, round butt frame), and it was generally stoked with .38 Special. My bathrobe pocket gun for years has been an S&W Model 38 .38 Special. It's what's with me when I let the chickens out in the morning. Not a thing wrong with it.

Even back in the day, when 158 grain lead round nose was the norm, it worked just fine at putting bad guys down. It started to get a bad reputation, however, in the 1960s when cops, increasingly, were being forced to engage drugged up perps. The old lead round nose wasn't doing it. Today, though, we have super sophisticated JHP loads for .38 Special that will do the job just fine.

Back in the late 80s, I had a (pre-Taurus) Rossi 88 stainless. The was the smoothest revolver, with the smoothest trigger pull of any handgun, I think I ever had. I was a great little gun. I carried PMC UltraMags in it. Foolishly sold it in the early 90s. Wish I still had it. Kept it under the counter of a store I managed before I got married.

I carry a Smith 342 at times w/129 +P hydrashocks.

Beats the crap out of a 380 for power.

A 9 will step up the power some, but mostly just in capacity.

I just heard Jerry Michuleck say the 38 is a very capable cartridge & only the 158 round nose cast gave it a bad rap.

Stainless Combat Masterpiece is on my hip every day. Buffalo Bore 158gr LSWCHP +P. Reloads are Underwood hard cast wadcutters (for both penetrating power and smooth, fast, no-hang reloads). I would be satisfied enough with Remington "FBI loads", but the Buffalo Bore is more better.

Hard to beat the Buffalo Bore Hard Cast Wadcutter Loading in a 38 Snub Nose for penatration.

Got a Retired LEO friend that got shot in the gut with the old Federal Nyclaid load he used to carry when he was a Detective. He got into a struggle with a Perp he was trying to arrest and the Perp grabbed his gun and shot him in the gut. He walked to the Ambulance and was only in the hospital for 2 days. 🤪

When out and about the homestead, I usually carry a S&W 66 with 4" barrel left over from my brief foray into law enforcement. I am not expecting anything serious so I load it with 158 gr round nose flat points loaded with 4.5 grs of Universal and use a Fobus clip on holster to lug it around. I carry a couple of speed loaders in my pocket for reloads.

This gives me much more positive results on skunks, raccoons, possums, and the occasional coyote or fox I run across than the 22 LR I carried before. I also feel a little better with the 38 if I were to run into a two legged varmint.

Yes. If I go outside around the place, a 637 & speed strip go too. lIt's loaded appropriately for its most likely use. For the next few months two CCI shot shells are up first.

Yes, a 638 in a pocket holster to follow gun fight rule #1. Mostly it's an around town warm weather piece. Out in the woods, up to no good, down at the hunting camp a '69 vintage Combat Masterpiece is a favorite.

My wife carries .38's in her S&W 327 R8. The .38's are loaded with Rim Rock 158 grain LSWCHPGC, which are cast soft at 5 bhn. Over a stiff charge of Power Pistol she gets almost 950 fps from the 8 shot Smith with 5 inch barrel.

My wife’s model 60 is stoked with those factory 125 sjhp+p from rem. Very manageable from that 3” revolver. But awful snappy from the little LCR I bought for my daughter. That gets standard Wadcutter loads till I can load up some mildish loads with a harder cast dewc

3” M60, loaded with mid-power stuff, pretty much the FBI load. Bedside gun, plus my standby for serious carry when I don’t want a bucketful of 9s.

The 3” is much easier for me to hit with than a snubby.

My 38's are 6" or longer barrel revolvers. I usually use them for targets or practice. I prefer carrying revolvers with 4" or shorter barrels. Therefore, I'll usually carry other revolvers.

I prefer classic.

Yep!

My Wife packs a S&W airweight J frame, and I pack a Colt detective special as a backup for my EMP or P-365

Have both 38's loaded with 148 grain target wadcutters.

I carry a 360 pd with 38 loads sometimes but I usually load a rem 125g golden Saber 357 load that is factory downloaded to just above 38 +p levels.

I bought a 38 ruger lcr fir my wife to carry walking the dog when the neighbors pit bulls were running the neighborhood. She almost refuses to carry but when she does I load it with Federal 130g hst hps and send her with a speedloader with Remington 38 +p 125g golden sabers.

The hst is a great load but loaded down flat with the case mouth and harder to reload quickly under pressure. That's why she gets rems for the reload.

I just cast a bunch of 148g Lee tumble lube wadcutters. I powdercoated them so now I need to see how they shoot. I also have about 3000 speer swaged 158g hp swc bullets I need to expansion test. I'm trying to duplicate the old fbi load with them.

I carry a S&W 642 often and load with Underwood 150 gr. wadcutter hard cast at 850 fps from a 2" barrel. Occasionally I pack my 4" M15 and usually it is loaded with 158 gr. SWC over 5.5 gr. of Unique.

I've got an old Rossi 3" snubby I carry sometimes, but rarely. It's an older gun, and it can easily be mistaken for a Smith 36. It shoots well enough, I've popped some prairie dogs with it, but I don't really care to trust it much. I'll keep it around, as it belonged to my late brother, (he carried it a LOT). It is fun to shoot, but so is my own stuff. I keep it around for a house gun, mostly.

Carry....nope, although I still shoot them fairly regularly at the range. I have one of my 357 magnums loaded with Hornady Critical Defense 38 Special +p for my wife here at home.

When I shoot 357 mag rounds out of the 101 it whacks my knuckle pretty good. I've found Hogue grips to work pretty well keeping that from happening. Try it, you might like it.

As far as the OP's question I have a few that I like. My favorites right now is an old Colt Detective Special, an S&W 642, and about 3 different LCR's, not to mention my favorites the Ruger SP101. What's not to like.

I've used the Hogue rubber grip on this gun. They are comfortable, but they are terrible for concealed carry. Tha Galco holster in the picture actually rides very, very close to the body. I found the Hogue a bit longer and fatter than the stock grip, and that the all-over soft rubber catches clothing more. I found the stock grips are better for concealed carry, a good combination of grippiness and less rubbing my side and catching my shirt. YMMV, but of the several grips I've tried, I keep going back to the stock grips.

Same thing on my GP100. I changed out to the Hogue, shot and carried it for awhile, and went back to the stock rubber/wood grips.

I do like them on my Redhawks for open carry.

I sure do, a S&W 337 PD pre-lock because at 12 ounces loaded with +P Hornady 110 gr. FTX Critical Defense it just disappears in a pocket or ankle holster. It isn't as flat as a semi, but at less than half the weight of my .380, 9 or .45 why not? A shot load or two up front in snake country is a real practical alternative too. I didn't know that I needed a Scandium .38 Special until I saw a S&W 360 at a gun show. I wasn't unhappy with an early M60 stainless .38 Special though that 12 verses 22 ounce weight difference to do the same thing sealed the deal for a lighter one.

My other auto is a .45

I carry a .357 loaded with +P+ .38 spl rounds on occasion. And I carry it religiously in Texas in the summer with a couple snake shot rounds up first.

Not an everyday carry, but I have a couple 357 revolvers that are almost always fed a 38 Spl handload consisting of 170gr SWC over 5.0 gr of Unique.

Depending on how I feel and where I’m gonna be, it’ll be a SIG 938 or a S&W 637 with a CT laser grip. If I’m in town with the Smith, it’s loaded with Speer Gold Dots. If I’m at the hunting lease, it’ll have two shot loads up first for snakes followed by three Gold Dots for the occasional armadillo.

I haven't chrono'd the load. I need to do that.

QuickLOAD predicts around 940 fps, and 19,400 max PSI.

I don't use my J Frame as a primary gun, outside of every once in a while using it for a pocket piece when taking off my dinner in a fancy restaurant. It is simply the gun that is frequently found riding in my offside front pocket and has been for more than a couple decades.

My Mother does, little nickel Colt Cobra with pretty walnut grips, i load a real Keith bullet that weighs around 163gr at 900+ fps, easy for her to shoot and will drill holes and be found in the 4th gallon milk jug, that'll do it, i worry more about barriers and hp bullet performance or lack there of for her, that Keith bullet should be pretty barrier blind, it's going to go deep and break every bone it hits.

In the summer, I carry a 340SC 38 spl in my pocket. So light, I sometimes forget it’s there.
In the winter, when I wear a jacket, I carry an HK P2000SK 40.

Being wishy-washy about what I like at any given moment, I've gone back to the Hogue on my SP101. It's longer than the stock grip, but there's no denying it's more comfortable. I took my wife out to a 10:25PM movie down town and I actually carried it, in lieu of my G19, in my pocket loaded with .38 Spl +P 125 grain SJHPs with another speed loader in the cargo pocket. I like this gun in my pocket. I'll have to carry it more. With the Hogue, its better in my pocket than in my Galco under my shirt.

I also decided to switch back to the Hogue on my GP100 (for now). Now all my .357s are dressed in Hogues. Not pretty, but they function well.

Hogue has wood grips without the finger grooves that feel really good to my hand. But those finger grooves on the rubber grips don't match up with my grip and I dislike them.

The rubber grips feel really good to me. I've even committed the sacrilege of putting rubber monogrips on my Super Blackhawk .44 Mag. Now that gun beat the hell out of my middle knuckle with the stock grip, to the point it left my knuckle raw. And I have one on my Redhawk .44, like the .357 Redhawk above. And a rubber monogrip on my Ruger MkIII target. I guess now all my Ruger revolvers and pistol have a rubber monogrip on them.

Lots of Smiths here. I don't carry this 38, but it's in a very convenient location in my house if needed.
I think it's one of the better ones ever made. Shoots pretty standard ammo, and I do not shoot +P in it.

Diamondbacks are beautifuuuul pistols. Never owned a Diamondback, have owned several Detective Specials which are the same frame and action but 2" barrels. Loved them, great frame size for the .38 Special, not too big, not too small.

I've been a fan of the old Detective Special for 25 years, at least. I still have two of them. Had four at one time. Last year I acquired a Diamondback, too, that's not only a beauty to behold, but shoots really nicely, too.

I carry a Featherweight in my pack while backpacking. Have a little bigger one that is fun to shoot 38's through as well as 357's. Actually considering selling it. PM me if interested.

Lots of great looking old guns here.

A 642 with laser grips is the .38 spl I carry with any regularity, loaded with 158 gr SWC's. I carry it as a backup when I'm down in Dade concrete jungle. I was carrying with the Remington 125 gr SJHP +P load for a time, but those are a bit snappy in the 642 IMHO. The 158's run 900-950 and pack a wallup, but are very smooth and not bad recoil.

Been using a 1st Model Colts Agent for almost 50 years. I use a handload of 158 gr lswchp over 5 gr. Unique. The idea was to find an effective load that wouldn't penetrate walls (lath & plaster, not sheetrock) in an urban environment. It's about all the recoil one can handle in a 14 ounce gun and stay on target.

Don't carry it, but I have an Astra 960 on the nightstand. Basically Astra's copy of an L frame Smith with a 4 inch barrel. Surplus Spanish police pistols.

Been kicking around getting a 442 or 642 Smith for carry.

Haven’t there been numerous tests showing that the wadcutters are the best load for these guns? I’ve got around 15 subnose revolvers and this thread makes me want to start carrying them again.

I wouldn't say there's any tests showing that. But...

It has been long known (like, back to the 30's at least) that wadcutter bullets definitely do more damage and can create a more traumatic wound than a round nose bullet can, which tend to just needle their way through, not doing much damage, and the hole kind of closes up behind it. A wadcutter hammers its way through, and the sharp-ish edge around the meplat will cut a hole through, which won't close back up, and tends to bleed quite profusely.

With hollow points, the problem is velocity. Out of the stubby less-than-two-inch long barrels, you usually simply cannot get enough velocity to get them to open up like they should. In four inch guns, this generally is no problem, but it's still a pretty big problem with snub guns. There are now finally some hollow point loads that are supposed to work reliably in 2" guns, but there are still a lot that won't.

I would say a wadcutter (going a little faster than the standard S L O W velocities of target wadcutter loads) would be more reliably effective than a hollowpoint that don't open up.

Buffalo Bore offers hard cast full wadcutter .38 Special loads. They have one that's only slightly faster than target loads and one that's a good bit faster.

For many years, I carried one. Three different revolvers during three different periods of my life (Model 60, Detective Special, and Model 13 FBI configuration). Still do, but now just in my bathrobe pocket, i.e., a Model 38, which is an aluminum J-Frame with the humpback that shields the hammer spur. Lets you cock the hammer, but yet it's shielded against snagging on clothing as you draw it.

Nope,

I have had it for many years.

It primarily stays in the house for the wife to use as an HD gun, as she is not into shooting. I use it for T&E for loads and accuracy testing and occasionally to hunt small game with in the winter after big game season is over.

I only use the .38 for warning shots. For serious work I use the 9mm and blow out the lungs.

I don't carry one for defense, but I remain a massive fan of the .38 Special. Modern +P's are downright decent for defense (if you still use a revolver for defense). 110-125gr JHP's are fantastic on bunnies. It is probably my favorite centerfire target cartridge. A HBWC is pretty hard to be for just dropping them all into a single hole.

This was the first 12 rounds out of my Python, 15 yards offhand at an indoor range (with very crappy lighting). I was very happy with that group, but you know I was pizzed about those two flyers. Oh well, those are the things that keep us humble and constantly striving for "better".

Never as a primary except to very low risk places, sometimes when motorcycle riding, but often as a bug..........S&W j-frame.

Well I ordered a Ruger LCRx 38 Special snubby yesterday.

I had a stainless steel 642 many years ago, left it behind in one of my divorces. Always wanted another snub in the inventory.

Can anybody confirm that the speedloaders for the J-Frame 38 also fit the LCR?

I used to carry a Colt Detective Special with a 2 inch barrel. But I gave it to a girlfriend to carry in her car and when she left, the gun did too. Didn't remember that she had it until 5 or 6 months passed and I just wrote it off. I carry a 9mm now.

That’s some mighty consistent shooting at 15 yards offhand there, GunGeek. The strays demonstrate that it’s a legitimate effort. I can’t seem to avoid them either:

Thanks, hikerbum.
That snub is an early 642 Air Weight with an XS Standard Dot Tritium front sight installed. With reasonable double action trigger skills, the XS Standard Dot will allow hitting directly behind the center of the front sight with some precision. Works on the 640-1 .357 too, though there’s certainly no mistaking it when each shot is touched off:

The 135gr. Speer Gold Dot .357MAG Short Barrel ammo seems more like .38SPL +P+ than actual full strength .357MAG, so it’s not too bad.

Yep. Carry a Smith 60-7 back at the cabin when I’m mowing or working. This and my hellcat are my only “carry” guns.
Bought my Dad a detective special off 30338 on here after he had shoulder surgery and was worried about not being able to rack the slide on his Springfield 1911.
Mom has one but he didn’t want to use it because it’s labeled “lady smith” LOL
Wife Carry’s this in her purse anytime she’s showing property too (realtor)

Ah, it’s story time! And, the opportunity for a bit of a stroll down Memory Lane.

I was a member of the prestigious Blue Team my last two years on the California Highway Patrol. When I left the CHP, too many years ago, I sold my two PPC match revolvers to fellow officers who were PPC competitors, because I didn’t think I’d have much use for them anymore.
BIG mistake.

One of those PPC revolvers was built for me by (then Officer) Bill Davis on my 4” Model 15 using an Apex barrel. The other, I built myself using a Douglas barrel blank I got from Numrich Arms, which I turned on my Sears Craftsman lathe and fitted to a 2” Model 15. I picked the 2” Model 15 because the top line of its frame continued straight all the way to where it met the barrel, instead dipping down as on the Model 14 and the 4” Model 15. The performance of the two revolvers was nearly identical; which one shot best depended on the day. They both Ransom Rested 5 shots into about a half inch at 25 yards.

A few years ago, I finally decided I needed to correct my BIG mistake. Before I went to Afghanistan for the State Department, I had been using a 2” Model 15 to shoot Steel Challenge (a real hoot, as I couldn’t get away with more than one miss without suffering huge time added during reload). So, when I returned to the U.S., I ordered a pre-cut and threaded Clark PPC heavy barrel with 10” twist (Douglas, I believe) from Brownells. It was fitted to the Model 15 frame, with the cylinder gap set at .003” by lathe turning the cylinder face. A slot, 1/8” wide, 1/8” deep and 1” long, was milled into the barrel for a front sight, which I filed to shape from 1/8” cold rolled steel and epoxied into place only after the surface finish was completed. A standard length ejector rod replaced the snubby version. The barrel was also drilled and tapped to take Weaver scope bases. For a very hard, rust resistant finish, the revolver was Black Nitride treated by H&M Metal Processing of Akron, Ohio.

The completed revolver is an exact match to the one I built so long ago, except for the tighter twist, the Black Nitride instead of bluing, the scope mount holes, smooth combat trigger, and Hogue rubber grips instead of the wood.

The 10” twist really likes Hollow Base Wad Cutters with the old standard charge of 2.7 grains of Bullseye, and whatever Federal uses in their .38 HBWC match ammo:

[Linked Image from i.postimg.cc]

Still scratching my head about this 2-and-3 group shot at 50 yards over sandbags.

[Linked Image from i.postimg.cc]

Full disclosure: The fifth shot above dropped down into the seven ring at 6 o’clock and is concealed by the scope’s ocular housing. Sorry, I just couldn’t bear to keep looking at it.

Here’s the new revolver, pictured wearing my old grips and resting on a B-27 target I shot with the CHP San Jose Area Office Team at the Tracy P.D. Match in 1975, before being invited to join the Blue Team:

I may put a set in my 442. I did put the oversized hogue grips on it, a little less concealable but a lot better to shoot.

I like the 442, as well. I have the more recent rendition of it that I bought from Grabagun several years ago really cheaply. For some reason, it's one of the only revolvers they make with no key hole. I guess their lawyers figure the double-action-only feature sufficiently inherently safe to cover them in case of a lawsuit.

I suspect the key lock was intended more to impair unauthorized users, than to prevent negligent discharges. Though I suppose they’re both kind of the same thing.

Still carry a 442 everywhere. Carried daily when I went to narcotics, as a primary when purchasing rock cocaine and a backup when serving warrants.

I must admit that I've been playing with a Glock 43 lately, though.

Here’s a S&W Model 60-4, which WAS a pretty reasonable concealed carry J-Frame revolver with a 3” barrel:

Not so easy to conceal, anymore, and clearing a pouch holster on the draw ain’t like it used to be.

I'll second this!

My summertime EDC is also a 442 and I too have started carrying a Glock 43 in a Garrett IWB when the over garments come out. I might switch to my recently acquired S&W 3953 TSW, but it needs a good action job before I do that. It carries 2 more rounds than the G43.

Better to be judged by 12 than carried by six.

Thanks, local_dirt.
It handles well too, very good balance.

But, its 5” Shilen barrel, with 14” twist, doesn’t seem to like the Hollow Base Wad Cutters quite as much as does the Model 15, with its 6” Clark/Douglas 10” twist barrel (shown above). That doesn’t compute, because the old Colt Pythons, famously accurate with wad cutters, had 14” twist barrels. With that Shilen barrel, the accuracy/precision of Model 60-4 is only so-so, not a lot better than with its original 3” S&W barrel, shooting two hands double-action, standing at 25 yards. Best it’s been able to do over sandbags at 50 yards is about 3-1/2 inches. While that would be pretty darn good for a 1911, it’s not so good for a revolver set up like this one is.

Any ideas?

Sorry, chips. I don't. But I would run it by Mike Heffron at Heffron Precision. Is an extremely experienced revolver gunsmith with over four decades working on them and a helluva nice guy. 641.732.0050.

Thanks for the referral, local_dirt.

I don’t believe there’s anything wrong with the machining, the tolerances, or the setup. This revolver is enough lighter than the H.B. Model 15, that I may simply need to minutely adjust my grasp in order to keep the gun from recoiling inconsistently off line before the fired bullet clears the muzzle. Or, I may just be holding my tongue wrong at let-off. Or, it may simply prefer a different load.

During my PPC competition days, I found that at the rarified levels of handgun performance, there seems to be as much Zen involved as physics. You know, “Be the bullet.”

The fun part of all this is shooting enough to figure it out, which by itself may even condition the bore sufficiently to tighten groups. Who knows?

You and me both, brother. There’s so much about the autos, particularly a well tuned 1911, which makes them more efficient and easier to shoot extremely well. But, the revolvers own my heart.

I've got a soft spot for revolvers, as well, and shoot them regularly.

I cut my teeth on double action revolvers back in 1980. They are what I learned on.

Not a hard fact, but in the general sense, when I shoot autos it's for practice. When I shoot revolvers it's for fun.
