Currently have Montanas in 7mm WSM, .280 AI and .30-06. Classic Selects in 280 AI and .30-06. The .223 is tempting. Outside of the 223 and 375 my pick of the litters for the different montana families are 6.5, 270, and 7 wsm. I love the 280 but the 270 just works with a bit less recoil. Sounds like you need that 223. Joe, Agree on the 6.5. The nnewest issue of hand loader has an article about 6.5 - 06 A Square In which the author is getting 3100 FPS with thr 140 grain Accubond and RL26. I'm tempted to buy a Montana just for the donor.

Can’t use the 223 Montana for a donor to a 6.5-06. You will need an 84L for that. You could do an 8400, but why? I own Montana is 223, 338 Federal and now 280AI. The 223 Montana is one of my most accurate rifles. I have used it to kill several deer and pigs. Some pigs have been very large. It’s a real joy to shoot, but the 338 Federal is the champ for carrying. Very light and points great. Just picked up the 280ai NIB and I have really enjoyed it so far.

Can someone post a pic of a green stock Montana? I once saw a green stock Fieldcraft and wonder if that may have been the actual rifle.
Are there people who prefer the Hunter over the Montana ( assuming the Montana was not threaded) and if so why ?

Jeff, if I pack enough powder into a 223, you don't reckon it will blow out to 6.5?

Probably need to find a way to keep the stocks from splitting. I have not owned a Montana in my life until this last year. Love the rifle. I have looked at more and I have found several with cracked stocks. They are splitting on the top of the pistol grip or down the top ridge of the butt stock. I have also seen a few on Facebook with the cracked stock in the same location. I am wondering if the age of the glue holding the halves together is causing this failure? Is this just the Montana stocks that are splitting?
