SWASS and ball gravy are the enemies of both productivity and relaxation. I prefer athletic shorts of thin, breathable material short enough not to bind up when you have to crouch down, so just above the knee is fine.

Personally, I like them a few inches above the knee. No Daisy Duke grape burglars or what's up Ese knickers for me.

I can find no mention of the term "cholo" in the history of shorts.

Cholos are usually hispanic males that wear shorts below the knee (or pants) but not cholo as the name of the short.

My daily wear once it starts getting hot around here is shorts. I never measured how far above the knees they are, but they are above the knees. When I'm working in a machine or tool and die shop I wear long pants (and proper footwear.) I'm amazed when some of these young kids show up to work at the shop in shorts and sneakers. That's usually my first "take-aside" conversation with them.

When I was in the Navy, in the Philippines, we were sitting around the lab one day and one of the guys mentioned how he wished we could wear shorts like the officers and chiefs could. We all, of course, worse dungarees and chambray work shirts. Our chief was there and he said, "You know, when I was at Guam (would have been in the 50's for him) we could wear khaki shorts, a tee shirt...." He got up and went to his office, came back a few minutes later with a copy of the NAS standing orders. There it was, authorized working uniform of the day for enlisted personnel was the dungaree uniform or "enlisted khaki short" which consisted of khaki shorts, white tee-shirt, white hat, black shoes and black socks. Next thing you know, a half-dozen of us were wearing that outfit. Chief made photocopies of the page from the NAS standing orders for us to carry around in case we got hassled by the MAA's for being out of uniform. We did, a couple of time, but after a while they got used to it and pretty soon we saw guys from other commands start wearing that uniform. My housemaids loved it, no more starching and ironing my shirts and dungarees.

I'm incredibly surprised in how many people here seem to think it's not gay for men to be wearing coochie cutters.

I don't wear shorts in public. I always HATED shorts. I remember when they were made of plaid polyester, tight and SHORT. Ugh. Still, shorts should be above the knees.

Below the knees... those are culottes. Pedal Pushers. Girls wear those.

The best short pants for the outdoorsman are made by cutting off an hemming BDUs about a half inch below the cargo pockets. Perfect length, good pockets, and sturdy material.
