Later this year I will be in the market for a new fly rod, or perhaps two. I am thinking the newer technology could/should make casting easier/better and give me more distance when required. Not looking to drop 1K for a rod, more like $400 (canadian) at the top end of the budget, especially if picking up two rods.

Use will be mostly trout/smallmouth in lakes, trout in streams/rivers and beach fishing for searun trout and pink andthe odd coho salmon. So lots of 1-5lb fish with the outside chance of an occasional somewhat bigger coho. Mostly use wooly buggers/clouser type flies for trout/bass and more standard wet flies on #6-10 hooks for trout/searuns/pink salmon. For beach fishing distance is sometimes/often desirable.
Current rod is a basic Redington 6wt 9' that has done okay but has definite limitations.
One thought is perhaps two rods. Something like a 5-6 wt and a 7-8 wt (for bigger fish, fighting wind or where more distance is desirable, usually with wind and bigger fish in mind!).
Thoughts on setups/specific rods from those who are into similar fishing situations?

Get one with a no-fault lifetime warranty

I have a TFO BVK 890 that works well in wind.

The newer Axiom in Fast or Extra Fast should work well.

I also have the 10' BVK in an 8, a little slower, but more bend while fighting and landing.

Get close and wack em hard!

A high quality lightly used in that price range might be better. I am a avid fisherman and Winston rod user. I see used Winston’s in that price range quite often.

New can many times be a mistake. Used quality rods are still quality, just at a better price. Try looking here and other sites, you will find a better rod used than you will by buying a new price point rod...

TFO for the win. Warranty service is out of Calgary and having used it twice, I'm impressed. Two week turnaround, cost is shipping one way.

I have a BVK 890 and it is fast and powerful. Pinks and cohos are fun. I beach fish.

FWIW- Allen Fly Fishing is doing a buy-one-get-one on all but their top two tiers of rods. If you're lookin' for two rods, might be a good way to go. They are priced in your budget and get decent reviews. You also have a return option if you don't like 'em.

I don't own one, haven't cast one, and have no affiliation with them. Just passing on the info.
