Just in case some of you people were planning on entering Yellowstone Park today , you should make sure the park is even open. Due to extreme flooding inside and approaching the Park from any of the entrances the park is closed.
The entrance thru Red Lodge MT is closed due to extreme flooding in town and the highway bridges are down./ gone in places. The highway to Gardiner/Mammoth, is closed near Yankee Jim Canyon and there are many roads in the park itself that are closed die to mudslides etc. Plus it is still raining.
All of the streams coming out of the Beartooths are at record flood stages.
All of the campgrounds on the Stillwater river are flooded, not to mention the homes and the bridges,
Due to huge amount of snow received recently, and the rain, it appears this will last for days!
In the meantime, they are warning everybody to not go joyriding to look at the rivers!
I am about to take a drive to see how things look. Not joyriding though! smirk

We are supposed to get more rain and snow through Wednesday, if the temps warm up it's going to get interesting fast here on the westside. It's been cold so the snow pack is way above normal right now.

I was checking Idaho's water supply this morning. They've quit reporting most of the southern part of the state but the central part, where the big wilderness areas are, they're reporting 20x normal water for this time of year? 20X? That's what they say. This is 100+ miles west and a bit north of Yellowstone. All of it will go down the Columbia. Those dams that the salmon lovers want to tear down will hold back a lot of it and possibly prevent some flooding down below.

I just saw a picture of the washed out highway bridge in Roscoe. That eliminates that route to Red Lodge and the Beartooth Pass --which was open for one day and has been closed since Memorial Day.
I can see the mountain tops that hold the snow on the Upper Yellowstone Drainage and the mountains around 8- 13 thousand ft. are still white.
Down here, I think most of the Yellowstone is still in it's banks.

For those of us back east, what does the flooding mean for the farmers and ranchers?

Yikes!! I love to visit Yellowstone. From far away in Dixie, I have been there 4 times.

Has Yellowstone ever before been closed by flooding?

I don't think so. I have been going to several times a year since I was born 76 years ago, and my mother and dad got married while working there in the late 30's. Also had an uncle there that lived and worked for the YP for 47 years.

I think this year highly unusual because of the late winter snow& (basically no winter) and cold weather and heavy rain.
