A friend of mine is wanting to sell some reloads. I normally wouldn't be interested but I know him and i'm not afraid of his loads. what would be a fair price for 30-06 (i know bullet price varies), 12 ga and 20 ga.

Only the friend can set a price tag on the goods. It's his materials plus a bunch of time. Handloaded ammunition at a reasonable price is a heck of a steal. I'd get the recipe card and ask if each one was weighed for quality.

It's risky, unless they were developed in your rifle. Is that the case? I wouldn't buy anyone else's reloads, unless they were dirt cheap and I'd pull the bullets and dump the powder. I've actually done that before. I handload for a couple buddies, but they are like my brothers and I have developed loads in their particular rifles. Since components are hard to find these days, I charge them for the components and not my time. I use a reloading cost calculator, like this one:

I've reloaded for a couple of people who were having problems finding ammo this past hunting season. I didn't do it to make money, but simply to help someone out. The powder charge was always on the lower end of the scale, just to play it safe. I would not do it for anyone, and told them that it was a one time thing until they could find ammo.

My late brother was a very good and careful reloader, and after his death I helped his wife dispose of his reloading supplies. There was a lot of reloaded ammo, and I ended up with it, as I didn't want to risk selling it. I was not afraid to shoot it, and still have quite a lot of it. There was one lot of 223 ammo, and some 308 loads that I ended up pulling the bullets, dumping the powder, and resizing the cases because they did not chamber in any of my rifles.

You have to be careful.

Have him shoot you a price, if it’s seems fair to you, then buy it.

Mackey Sagebrush sells a bunch of handloaded pistol cartridges here using new brass. They appear to be top shelf and he gets near $1 a round and they don’t last long. Just a comparison.

How does the calculator value the time it takes to make the cartridges?

To me, the value of the reloads are about the value of the actual bullets. If they have to be pulled and reloaded, brass is cheap so of really no value and the powder may or may not be able to be re-used. Plus you may need the time and effort to resize the brass to fit your gun. Plus, when you reload, now
Your shooting pulled projectiles rather than new.

Value may go up slightly if it’s Norma or Lapua brass.
