Maybe some Eagles for honorable mention/11

But I’d put James Gang in front of that actually.

Post Cobain? It sounds like you just described Cobain! Nirvana had an unmistakable influence on music but in terms of talent they didn’t have much IMO and we’re all down hill after Smells Like Teen Spirit.

Linkin' Park and Sublime should make "the list."

Cobain and his fans did to rock music what Garth Brooks did to Country Music. Ruined it.

Arbitrarily narrowing it down to a convenient 35 year window I’d go with 1953-1988 for the zenith in great music. I’m not a fan of the 90’s grunge scene and by early 2000 technology limited the need for a band and it turned into pop female vocals over piped in instruments.

Neither Foreigner or Bad Company were American Rock Bands.

When specifying “rock”, I feel you have to go all the way back to when it started. I also considered bands that defined aspects of Americana or somewhat defined a generation . This is a very hard list to create with everything considered. Here goes.

Bill Haley and the Comets (Rock Around The Clock)
The Four Seasons (Lots of hits, transitioned to 60s)
The Beach Boys (A distinct part of Americana)
Lynyrd Shynyrd (The absolute best IMHO)
The Doobie Brothers Longevity and tons of hits)
Chicago (Soft rock but played great as a band)
Jackson Browne (defined the early 80s)
Bon Jovi (They took the country by storm)
Van Halen (Mo comment needed)
The Eagles (America absolutely loved the Eagles)

Honorable mention to the following:

Boston
CCR
The Allman Brothers
ZZ Top
Guns N Roses
Dire Straits
America
Metallica
Journey
Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band
Steely Dan

We lived in Boise where Paul Revere got started. My brother was a drummer and he was with the Raiders for a short time in the late 60's or early 70's. He didn't like rock, though. He said that for a drummer, it was too boring, nothing but keeping a beat. He preferred jazz because it let him get creative on the drums. I've seen a list of all their members over the years and he's not on it so apparently he wasn't with them very long.
He died in 2010. I met Paul Revere at his funeral when he introduced himself to me. Revere died himself 3 or 4 years later.
