Well Bob Milek cost me a couple of Gs when I went through a Tc contender phase, but worst of all is Clay Harvey. I read a book by him 20-25 years ago called something like "Rifles and cartridges for big game".
Up till that time I though I was well armed owning a 30.06. Clay's book helped me to decide that I really needed some where between 4-8 rifles to do things properly. Now if I could just get the right combination of the 4-8 rifles I would be set.

I am not so sure.. but someone on this board is slowly convincing me I need a 9.3 in CRF its not MD is it?

I bought another Ruger #1 because of "JB" and he was right..an excellent shooter.

I have a 260 rem now and that is due to the campfire crowd.

I bought my Savage 170 pump 30-30 based on an article in an old Gun Digest. It may have been written by Bob Bell.
Gave me an itch that I had to scratch. laugh

Jim,

When did you order it?

John,

I ordered it in January, and the estimate then was something like July. It was actually ready in September, and I asked Melvin to delay shipping while I was in Wyoming for an antelope hunt. There was also a week of delay while we played update the FFL.

Because of Warren Page writing about hunting with his 7mm Mashburn Magnum, I had a 7mm Ackley Magnum built in 1957. I would have had the Mashburn built, but P.O. Ackley built the rifle, so I went with his version.
That was prior to Remington coming out with the 7mm Rem Mag, which they brought out in 1963.

I have a .44 Mag due to Keith and a 700 BDL SS/SYN in 7SAUM due to JB. Been happy with both.
Not sure who to blame for the Encore w/multiple barrels, the 10/22's the H&k's, the benelli and winchester shotguns, or the Ruger Hawkeye Alaskan in .375 Ruger that is on layaway right now but it had to be someone cause I sure wouldn't spend all that money on my own.

While going through some of my old gun rags the other night I ran across a battered issue of Handloaders Digest Ninth Edition circa 1981 containing an article entitled Wildcat Mediums. The article was penned by some young whippersnapper by the name of John Barsness. Seems he was partial to the 8mm/06 at the time as well as the 338/06.

Be it known that the above author also travels under the name of Mule Deer and has been influencing unsuspecting rifle loonys with his drivel for nigh onto three decades.

HE MUST BE STOPPED AT ALL COSTS

...It were a pretty good read tho'

So far this year have fooled with rifles in .458 Win., .280 Ackley Improved, .340 Weatherby Magnum, and .450/.400 Nitro-Express 3". Oh, and a pump in .308, an o/u double in .30-40 Krag, a bolt-action in .300 Savage, and an AR-15 in .223. I plan to drivel onward with all of them and report the results. Just try to stop me!

I have bought a rifle because of a gunwriter, but in a somewhat roundabout way.
A cerain gunwriter, who shall remain namemuledeerless, praised the virtues of 6X scopes with heavy crosshairs on game rifles.
Well, I purchased, used, from the Campfire said scope, and used it. Said scope induced a great deal of self confidence on difficult shots, and worked on several deer, an elk at quite a distance, a running coyote, a sheep, some prairie dogs.
I even made the comment last fall that I was beginning to question the wisdom of buying said scope, because I was getting dam sick of butchering.

I then loaned said scope, on my favorite rifle to a friend that I hunt with. Friend found he was deadly on deer, coyotes, and other critters with this setup, ends up using the setup when we hunt together.
So, in order to have a 6X scope to use myself, I had to buy another 270 and another 6X scope.
I will have my revenge! I moved to within walking distance of Capitol Sports, so I can check the used rifle rack every day and there might be a unique rifle or 3 that finds its way home with me before the unamed gunwriter gloms onto it.

Royce--

You're in Helena? The timing is a little unfortunate. They had a used (but nice) 6x42 Leupold for sale a couple of months ago, for a VERY good price. I emphasize "had."

Yea... Why do I have this strong suspicion that the scope went in a southerly direction when it went out the door?????

Not so much because of a ceratin gunwriter, but i was researching hand guns at the time and read a nice peice about a torture test they did on a XD 40 in a magazine. I was looking at this gun anyways, and this pushed me over the edge.

I hate to admit it but this horrible thing has happened to me, and may not have stopped yet. I bought my first 1911 because of Jeff Cooper, my first Model 24 S&W because of Elmer Keith, my first .35 Whelen because of Layne Simpson and Elmer Keith. Skeeter Skelton made me convert a S&W Model 28 to .44 Special and shorten a 6 inch S&W 629 to five inches. John Taylor's African Cartrdges made me buy a 9.3x62mm and maybe a double .450-400 some day. I bought the .416 Taylor because of John Wootters. John Taffin made me convert a Old Model Ruger Blackhawk .357 to .44 Special, as well as a 50th Anniversary Ruger Blackhawk by John Gallager. John B. has made me buy a 6.5x55 Swedish Mauser Ruger M77 Mk II, a CZ550 in 9.3x62mm and recently a 375 Ruger Alaskan, and I have two .375 H&Hs! I don't know who to blame the .458 Lott on, but Phil Shoemaker's article on the .458 Lott may have had something to do with it. I even got a Glock Model 22 10mm Auto in part because of Ted Nugent, and he isn't even a real gun writer! I'm looking for an AR-15 as I write this, reasons unstated but understood.
