The 3rd clutch of bluebirds moved out of the box a few days ago. I went to clean out the box this morning and there are 2 baby flying squirrels in the box. I thought it was neat. I'm going to have to set up a night camera.

I had a Blue Bird nest box hanging on a tree in my yard and after the birds left i took it down and brought it into the garage to clean out. Put it on the work bench and unscrewed the front and had a Flying Squirrel jump out and land on my shoulder.....damn near crapped myself. It jumped off my shoulder and scurried out the garage door and back into the woods. I just leave the boxes alone now. Birds seem to clean it out themselves.

They should be cleaned and disinfected after every season. Squirrels seem to want to gnaw into the ones I have had up.

Did the birds really leave or did they get eaten by the squirrels?

My new boxes have a curved piece of wire mesh to maintain an airgap below the nest. It seems to help. Also, after each batch, I lift the front to expose it to air and sun to disinfect. While I've never encounter flying squirrels, I have found them loaded with bugs - mostly Earwigs.

My last clutch of bluebirds were hardly out the door and Carolina wrens moved in.

Rather have more bluebirds. But the wrens sure do sing pretty right outside the sunroom.

That will work. I will put sheet metal around the entry hole in the future. Squirrels seem to think there is something in there that is worth eating.
