The State zoned the mountains as Wilderness and only Hikers and Horse back could enter those areas.
After Redford got almost what he wanted he got caught Helicoptering his friends and himself high up in those areas so that they cold ski the untouched wilderness.

He did a lot of BS to try and stop the Utah people from using their own lands.

So he's a typical rich guy. Not surprising.

But it is one of the best movies ever made.

True character and gun junkie.

Another reason to like this movie

Great documentary. Thanks for posting. I love this movie. Still got my fifty-caliber Hawken and have killed 6 whitetail with it. Sadly, have not killed a bear, but I can skin griz. As fast as you bring 'em in.

It's been my experience that when folks get to a certain tax bracket they all like to post property, and rewrite laws and regs so that they can enjoy what they bought but no one else gets the chance.

He started out with a Hawken 45 caliber, but it was a real Hawken.

Then he found Hatchet Jack frozen with a 50 caliber Hawken, and a note on his frozen corpse…

I, Hatchet Jack, being of sound mind and broke legs, do leaveth my bear rifle to whatever finds it. Lord hope it be a white man. It is a good rifle, and kilt the bear that kilt me. Anyway, I am dead. Yours truly, Hatchet Jack.

Glad you got that right. Misquotes are abundant. Some folks need to watch the movie again.

Actually, he started out with a .30 caliber, but it was a genuine Hawken.

That sure would have been a puny round ball.

So said the movie, but I am sure they didn’t make one in that small of a caliber. .38 maybe, but I really doubt they made a .30…

One of my favorite movies. I've watched it over and over again.

Interesting video, thanks for posting!
Definitely one of my favorites, along with Chuck Heston and Brian Kieth in “The Mountain Men”.

The movie ain't horrible, but Redford's best work was when he directed and narrated 'A river runs through it'. That is a quality film. Don't hate on Bob, The Natural was a great flick too. Good body of work.

His first rifle was a .30, I never could understand why they had a mountain man with a squirrel gun.

Added it to my cart.

My unofficial in laws live in Reed Point. I always enjoy driving west from there and seeing the Crazys’.

They said there was remnants off the crazy woman’s cabin site yet, or at least it’s rumored to be.

A 4 million dollar budget is pretty tight. The first “Rocky” movie with Sylvester Stallone was done on a million dollar budget. Napoleon Dynamite was done with $400,000.00.

Few movies can claim such success on such limited budgets…

I saw this movie in the theater in Atlanta in January 1973. I was a 22 year old suburban boy, and this movie just blew me away. I got my buddy Marc and we decided we would spend the summer in the wilderness of British Columbia, living like Jeremiah Johnson.
We had never ridden a horse, had never been hunting. We began mountain man training, for the next 6 months.

We found a stable north of Atlanta where we could ride horses. We bought saddles. We made our own panniers from plywood. We bought the book "Horses, Hitches, and Rocky Trails" and we learned to tie our own diamond. You can't be a mountain man if you can't tie a diamond hitch.

We got in touch with an outfitter named Don Peck, near Ft. Nelson BC. Don agreed to rent us 3 horses, of course we had to have a pack horse, and we drove up to the Canadian wilderness, and spent the summer riding along out in the woods and camping out. Don said we could hire one of his hunting guides to go along but we turned that down, we wanted to do it on our own.

We were not attacked by any Crow Indians. Thank God we also didn't see any grizzly. Saw lots of moose and deer. The mosquitos are plentiful in BC in the summer.

I love this movie and I still have my .50 Hawken.
