If I make a second post do I get to change my mind? Ok I I'm changing my mind only for a second trip this time instead of a 22lr I will use a 22 hornet for the same rasons I stated about the 22lr plus the added ability to shoot black powder only this time I gotta have a large supply of small rifle primers. Hornets are deadly, use very little powder and a whole lot of ammo can be carrid at one time. Make my rifle a Ruger 77.
Bullwnkl.

I know that I sound like a broken record( this will only mean something to those of us old enough to remember records), but, I'll stay with my .375H&H or AI.
With cast bullets(cast your own, or use those for the Cowboy Comp), load'em from 38 Special velocities, and they'll work just fine on small game and fowl. Or, in a pinch, load'em up for big game.
Using jacketed bullets, using those designed for the .375Win., these will work quite nicely for a short range brush gun for "small" big game. At around 2000 to 2400 fps, these offer near zero meat damage.
Moving up to "premium" bullets and "maxing-out" the velocities, your capable of 400yrd(plenty far)shots,or take on any dangerous game on the planet.
It's pretty hard to beat that for versatility! -memtb

MEMTB-
How many rounds of .375H&H do you think you could carry into the ol' time machine? Let's assume you had to walk 15 feet. I don't have a clue what a .375H&H cartridge weighs. Maybe the way to figure this out would be to take the amount of weight you could carry for 15 feet and divide it by the weight of a single cartridge. Somebody want to do that for a .223? 22LR? I'd be interested to see how much ammo we'd be able to take with us.
Another issue: What are everyone's best guesstimates as to how many rounds we'd end up shooting per day? Would it average out to 1 bullet per day? More? Less? Just wondering...
Wade

The hypothetical scenario was originally set forth in a separate thread entitled "One caliber....what is it?"

Since you did say "one gun for survival," it would have to be a gun which could do anything from fill the pot with a squirel or bird as well as protect you from big ugly things . Of course there is always the two-legged "ugly" that needs stopping as well. One gun only-12 gauage double. Slug in one barrel (I know that doesn't work well) and 4 shot in the other. If there could be a hi-bred survival gun, I suppose it would be a drilling - .06 over 12 ga.

HI,

I am really leaning toward the 404 Jeffery,it can hunt anything on earth. It can shoot flat as a 375H+H hand loaded. It has the power that will stop anything around, it will go on the same lenght action as a 375H+H.The only thing that is a little problem just do not have the bullet selection of a 375 or a 416.There are more bullets that are coming out for the 404J,.423,which is great.Kev

How about bunnies and bushy tails with your 404 or 30-06?

22 LR all the way. If you cant kill it with a 22 you should keep away from it. I dont know if anyone has ever popped an elephant with one, but I would not be surprised if someone tried. (Probably died doing it but.....)

I guess it comes down to how much ammo you can fit in the time machine. I think the best place to live would be the mountains of Northern GA. As such, Mossberg Mariner 12GA would do me fine. Broad spectrum of ammo choices. Between Brennekes and an limited assortment of shot, I could take anything in the area without a problem. Its heavily forested with valleys, so long shots are rarely presented anyways.

That brings up a question folks, where would you magically teleport yourself to? What do you guys think would be the best area for such a survival situation?

Really? I thought you were in AK. Where abouts are you? I have spent a little time in the area on a couple occasions and it is a welcome change for Central Indiana. Some of the best camping I ever did was at Chattahoochee NF. Fishing is wonderful compared to the living buttholes we got around here.

I believe Big Stick is saying that he already lives where a man would teleport himself to, Alaska. No better place.

I must go with my native pall from the North West Territories. With 100+ moose, 100+ black bears, around 200 Wood Bison, and 2000 caribou to his name, his personal choice is the 30-06 with 180 grain Nosler Partitions, for the Caribou he prefers the .270 with 130 grain soft points. He usually uses WW factory fodder for the .270. He has been exposed to many different calibers, but that is his choice. He also likes the .308 Win. mod 88, for moose and bear. I sold him in 1986 my Steyr Manlicher professional model in 30-06, and that is still his favourite, together with the ancient 30-06 Remington semi-auto.
I do not use the 06 because it is boringly effective. I prefer something more colourfull.
However his word is that of the ultimate pro, and that is what I would go with for only one caliber.
