They've announced what it will cost for the maritime version: A 1-time hardware fee of $10k and $5k/month. Maybe I won't get it for my 14' fishing boat so I can surf the web in the middle of a lake.

Price is too high but the ability to communicate anywhere is pretty cool. Most boats are only able to speak about 25-26 miles with a VHF radio.

FCC approved it for any moving vehicle, cars, boats, planes, etc.

Pretty steep entry but for business people and businesses it would seem to be a fair deduction at tax time.

5$/month is cheap enough.

MY MISTAKE In my OP I had a typo. I said $5/mo. That's 5 K per month.
I apologize for the error. That's why I said it's for your yacht. You need to be able to afford a yacht to afford that.

You can communicate from anywhere on the planet with a satellite phone. They are way cheaper than what has been quoted for Starlink.
This is one example.
satellite phone store
There are several other competitors.
Here's another example.

That’ll curb it.

With a $250 phone cost and a $60 per month cost, why would everyone not have a satellite phone instead of a cell phone?

This system has no peer.

5k a month is nothing for its target market.

To match Starlink, you need to also get a satellite mobile hotspot and pay for data. I've never looking into the cost of those.

There are already marine systems that work just fine. However, if you don't like the $5k for starlink you are really not going to like what they cost. I have seen high speed go for over $100k a month plus hardware. Yup over a million dollars a year just for internet. Maybe now the hughes satellite internet guys can feel a little better.

LOL.

Nobody wants reliable hi speed internet while crossing oceans in large container ships or oil tankers or cruise ships or deep sea fishing vessels.

Destined to fail. laugh
