I've brought this up before and been vilified by those who have never had the opportunity to make the comparison, but I'm dumb enough to try again. Soy sauce smells exactly like the hog barn at the county fair. This is not meant as a criticism, merely and observation. (I happen to think that the smell of the hog barn at the county fair is a nice odor that evokes pleasant memories from the past.) (Not that kind, pervert!)

Currently La Choy, but it isn't exclusive to it.

I'm at war with La Choy and other similar fake soy sauces. I steer people away from them at every opportunity.

Were the others you've tried also hydrolyzed soy protein concoctions, rather than naturally brewed?

Probably - my level of sophistication is sadly primitive.

Real soy sauce is readily and reasonably had. Kikkoman is in most stores and very reasonably priced.

I've had "Chico and the Man" before. I did not like it because it pours out of the bottle instead of dropping out. (Remember my level of sophistication?) I will get it again and see if I still have the same olfactory response. I appreciate your input.

One time I showed a friend the difference. I had him taste a drop of Kikkoman and then taste a drop of La Choy. When the La Choy hit his tongue he accused me of trying to poison him. grin

I cringe when I read posts about using Dale's or Allegro marinade because they're made mostly of the chemistry set fake soy sauce.

I was introduced to silver swan soy by some Filipinos to make bistek.

Man was it a intense soy flavor.

That, and datu puti. Delicious

Just cause it’s fake doesn’t mean it’s good… silicon for example

Those would be silicone, and most of the time they're not to my taste either.

I'm not a connoisseur, but I gather most "wasabi" out there is fake too.

After living three years in Japan and another three in Asia it's Kikkoman's. There area number of different kinds of Kikkoman soya sauces including gluten free.

And none remind me of a hog barn. whistle

Just because something isn’t authentic, doesn’t mean it can’t be appreciated, or, better.

And individual taste is the ultimate barometer.

Sister in law had some lamb chops tonight- the smell alone is gross to me. She loved em, although medium well, so who am I to say they’re gross?
