Mary and I planted a September Ruby tree years back. It was the only actual apple tree we had. It produced on its own a construction wheel barrow right full of good spples the same year we planted it. There was a Royalty ornamental crab near by that produced unedible fruit. Wabigoon and his wife know where we used to live, basically less than 10 miles from his Canadian cottage.
"Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life." (Prov 4:23)
Most (not all) apples need another variety as a pollinator, some need two (triploid). Another variety of apple (or a crabapple) can work, with some restriction/requirement for blooming at the same time . A nearby apple or crabapple (like a neighbour's tree) will do.
