Recently had a friend loose his Lab to a snake bite. Just received this notice for members in the Houston area.
I’m in no way affiliated with this group. But I have used them for my setters. Hasbeen

I don’t know what you mean. But you must not have hunting dogs. Most that I know who hunt in snake country do a procedure like this to condition their dogs to avoid snakes. Hasbeen

I would take advantage of it if it was in my area.

I wouldn't dare to take my dogs out for a romp in these hills this time of year.

I train my dogs myself. With snakes.

It works. I even buzzword them "Snake!" to alert them.

They can be messing around some brush and I'll tell them to come back, there might be a snake in there, and they hear that word and immediately go on alert, and come to me.

You can't grab a snake and run fast enough to catch one of my dogs. laugh I try it. wink

I do try and refresh the training at least once a year.

Like you Barry. The areas I normally hunt have snakes year around. Always a snake danger. Hasbeen

SOP down in Arizona. The school my relatives chose didn't let the dog owner on site. I'm thinking they took a dead Mojave Green rattler, beat the living bejasus out of your dog and charged 'em 50 bucks...which doesn't make any difference because it worked. The 50 is damn cheap when you get to the vet and the dog dies anyway.

Well this is a fine pickle we're in, should'a listened to Joe McCarthy and George Orwell I guess.

Here on the farm every dog I’ve owned in the last 30 years has been bitten by either a copperhead or a cottonmouth. Rattlesnakes are not in my immediate area. Thankfully I’ve never lost a dog to snakebite. My vet usually gives them a couple injections and a couple pills for infection and swelling.

They use live snakes with fangs pulled and mouth taped shut. They put a shock collar the dog.
You can watch but they have dog handlers. Hasbeen

Son's two year old Elhew pointer get bit by a large timber rattler, cost $2K in vet bills to save her life. If this is available in MS he'd be on it like a duck on a June bug.

We had one pup bitten on the foot by a rattler. Got really sick. Got her to a vet and some doses of antivenin later she pulled through but had problems with that leg for years. Vet said it had to be a baby rattler from the look of the fang marks and the dog's survival.

I always trained mine with rattlers and a collar until my dog saving collar disappeared. Used the shots too.

Now i just go with the shots which i hear sometimes work - a little.

Ditto.

One of the whippets think snakes are his to chase. If he sees one first, he's at the end of the leash trying to get it.

Fortunately, the one rattler we've seen on the property was noticed by the young whippet and he made funny noises at the funny noise snake. We heard and were able to get him away before thing got complicated.

That snake tasted pretty good on the grill.

Much of the time, the bite/infusion from a newly born or small/immature rattler can be more problematic than a bite by a big one. Most young do not yet have good control of the amount of venom released - tend to let it all go. Have seen this effect more than once.

Bummer.

I used to be terrified of moths when I was a kid. Must have been from seeing that Mothra movie. I got over it though.

I think I saw somewhere that some scientists think there might be some genetic component to the fear of snakes. Maybe you got a big dose of it!
